This substantial and handsome volume accompanies an exhibition in America but stands alone and can be enjoyed in its own right. It has beautiful colour photos of portraits and other artefacts of the Medici, their associates, contemporaries and hangers-on, accompanied by informative and readable commentaries and essays. Although the book is large it is by no means unwieldy unlike some arts books. It is also thankfully largely free of dreary religious images of the period.
