Traditional African Designs (Dover Pictorial Archive)

I really love the dover pictorial archive books but this one was a bit of a disappointment. It's a short book. Each image has very little information no plate index, just a word about the image and sometimes the place where it is from. Most of the images are larger...more masks than anything. Some of the cover books are outstanding. This one is not.

This book had very few clip art designs that were of any use. The concentrated on some masks but no real designs. The other book had a CD in it and had all the same pictures too. This was a better investment. Wish I had known that before I wasted my money on both books. Neither were very good. Have several Dover clip art books and this was one of the most disappointing.

I really like this book because have big designs and drawings which help me see clearly the differences and all.

I found this book very useful as it has good clear black and white illustrations from all over Africa. I was trying top create textile wall hangings and quilts using fabric from Africa and used this book as a source of inspiration for my designs.

La qualité de l'illustration est très moyenne. Dessins en noir et blanc plutôt basiques et grossiers. On aurait aimé un peu de couleur et surtout, un peu plus de finesse. Pour avoir pas mal de bouquins sur l'art africain, je trouve que les motifs réels que l'on trouve sur les objets sont d'une autre qualité. Je ne trouve pas que ce livre rende hommage aux arts premiers. Nul doute que si vous essayez de reproduire ces motifs à main levée, vous ferez mieux ! Mais peut-être trouverez-vous une source d'inspiration malgré tout...

J'avais choisi ce livre car je pensais trouver de belles idées pour la peinture sur porcelaine, hélas il n'y a rien !

The cover leads one to think the contents would be more colourful and interesting. It's not. Poor quality production. I tried to give it away and it was given back to me!
