Q: What length should I buy if I'm only buying a single wrench?

As the first guy said, 'It depends on what you want it for'. That said, the adjustable wrench in a basic home toolbox is traditionally the 8". It will open to 1" and is the most versatile for common general tasks. After that, I'd get the 6" one for smaller nuts. A 12" is occasionally useful, but I don't find that I grab mine that often. I use the 8" and 6" regularly. Good luck.

The jaw capacity of the 15 inch adjustable wrench is 1-3/4 inches.

Q: What is the width of the jaws, side-to-side? I need something to get in tight places.

If you mean the "thickness" of the jaw, then I measured it to be approximately between 9/32" and 5/16" thick.
