Anyone who has served as a soldier could not fail to be entranced by this book, in which the detail is totally accurate. Anthony Powell is a wonderful writer, and the Valley of Bones is effectively autobiographical.The description of General Liddament's inspection of his platoon and the story of the porridge is a comic masterpiece (and only slightly exaggerated!).
