This book keeps the Osprey tradition of short sweet and accurate alive. Great breakdown of the technical side of the Biafra war. Demonstrates the terror is African tribalism over true democratic principles. All that time under European rule and they learned nothing but greed and favoritism by birth. Nigeria has come back to haunt us as a Muslim terrorist camp! Started in 1967 with the Ibos oppression. Good book to complete the African Series!

Little remembered today, the Biafran War was a fight for independence by the Christian Ibos against the Muslim majority of Nigeria following Nigeria's independence from Britain. The war involved not just ground forces but also air and naval forces by both sides and improvisation was the name of the game. Colorful leaders and colorful characters from the rank-and-file abounded, if the photos and plates are anything to go by. It's a fascinating story and the photographs and artwork of this Osprey book makes for a great reference or for a good read in its own right.

Great overview of the conflict that tore a nation apart. It's echoes reverberate even more than ever with the current happenings within the land. Never knew white mercenaries were involved in the conflict.

There have been numerous African wars and it's interesting to study the different conflicts and their stories. This is a solid entry that meticulously details the opposing sides to the war chronicling their armaments, uniforms and insignia. A good read with beautiful plates

Wonderful Read

I was hoping for a short (given the book length) history of the war, providing an expert voice. There is a time line, but the book focused (as I now realise is the intent of the series) on the uniforms. The equipment was given a cursory description, but really only enough to go elsewhere to look up. There was no real description of the conflict or the tactics. some of the personalities are described, but why they were chosen is unclear - possibly because they were more flamboyant characters.The photographs were interesting, as they were mostly new to me,but I so badly hoping for a reasoned history and discussion of this war.

I thught this was Osprey back to their best. This is a worthy addition to the series. Narrative- good. Plates - good. Photos- good

A good presentation of facts but no real analysis.

Während der größere Teil Nigerias von Muslimen und Anhängern alter Natureligionen bewohnt ist, lebt im Südosten des Landes der christliche Stamm der Ibo. Diese, besser gebildet und "moderner", litten stark unter ihren rückständigen Mitbürgern. Ende 1966 eskalierten die Spannungen und zwischen 30.000 und 50.000 Ibo wurden Opfer muslimischer Progrome, weitere etwa 600.000 flohen in den Osten des Landes, in ihr altes Stammesgebiet. Am 30. Mai 1967 erklärte sich Biafra selbständig und verlangte die Sezession. Ein blutiger Bürgerkrieg begann, in dem die von Waffenlieferungen beinahe vollkommen abgeschnittenen Ibo von Anfang an nicht die geringste Chance hatten. Trotzdem wehrten sie sich, oft mit primitivsten selbstgefertigten Waffen, tapfer gegen die muslimischen Truppen Nigerias. Hunderttausende Ibo aber verhungerten vor den Augen der Welt, dass Wort "Biafrakind" ist mir bis heute erschütternd in Erinnerung geblieben. Am 15. Januar 1970 schließlich kapitulierten die letzten Ibo-Truppen, der Krieg war zu Ende, Nigeria blieb vereint, der Preis dafür waren bis zu zwei Millionen Leichen.In der Men-at-Arms-Serie des renommierten britischen Militärverlages Osprey, in der Unterserie "Modern African Wars", erhält man einen raschen und trotzdem sorgfältigen Überblick über alle wesentlichen Ereignisse. Auf (wie immer) 48 Seiten, mit (wie immer) tollen Zeichnungen und interessanten Fotos und in leicht und flüssig zu lesendem Englisch.

Les sources de renseignements sur le conflit du Biafra ne sont pas nombreuses et ce volume de la série MAA de chez Osprey apporte les données de base sur cette guerre.L'acheteur potentiel ne doit pas s'attendre à des explication tactiques ou techniques sur les différentes phases de cette guerre essentiellement connue en Occident par les ravages de la famine dont elle fut l'élément déclencheur. L'auteur se contente d'une brève évocation en fournissant en début de volume une chronologie très sommaire d'une vingtaine de dates et d'événements marquants puis, ici et là, il apporte quelques informations sur le caractère des différentes unités engagées des deux cotés ou sur certains officiers sortant du lot.L'état d'esprit des troupes fédérales (Nigéria) et Biafraises est évoqué ainsi que la totale disproportion des forces en faveur du Nigéria aidé et soutenu par la Grande-Bretagne et le bloc soviétique.Quelques anecdotes sur le dénuement des troupes Biafraises (1 cartouche par fusil si le soldat était en défensive, 2 s'il participait à une action offensive !!!) ou sur les troupes Fédérales ou les mercenaires qui se battaient des deux cotés (on parle toujours de Rolf Steiner mais jamais des pilotes Britanniques qui opéraient les avions nigérians...) émaillent le récit.Au final, pas un grand cru d'autant plus que les illustrations de Raffaele Ruggeri ne sont pas du tout bouleversantes mais au mieux un point de départ.

Would have liked more on the buccaneering aerial activities of Gustav von Rosen and even a picture or two of some Nigerian migs or il-28's.
