I would say this keyboard is NOT silent. The keyboard I used this to replace was/is an old HP low-profile keyboard that had totally silent membrane keys. This keyboard has good feedback feel, but it does make a "clacking" noise which some people may not like or tolerate. It's not as loud as some keyboards I've used in the past, that were totally mechanical switches.

How do I use the volume up and down buttons? They don’t seem to work by just pressing them

You need to hold the 'FN' key while pressing them. They are a second function for those keys.

How big is the keyboard (since Amazon is inconsistent with product size being the size of the actual product or the box it comes in)?

As a guy with big hands. I say it’s a good size keyboard.
