The Lonsdale brand was founded in London in 1960 by the then 22-year-old British boxer Bernhard Hart. His brand was named after Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), who made a name for himself in modern boxing in the 1890s. Hugh Lowther was among other things a founding member of the National Sporting Club, which organized public boxing matches under strict rules and thus contributed significantly to the social recognition of boxing. In 1960 Bernhard Hart opened the first Lonsdale shop on Beak Street, in the middle of London's Soho district. Since then, well-known professional boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Henry Cooper, Sugar Ray Robinson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Ricky Hatton have worn the Lonsdale brand. Even today, these famous personalities and the most important milestones from the history of the brand's origins play a major role and appear again and again in the modern designs of the now extensive product line. In 1979 The Jam Chef Paul Weller bought a large number of T-shirts for his concerts. Thanks to this, Lonsdale gained great notoriety and showed that their clothing is not just for athletes. Professional athletes, amateurs and enthusiasts around the world have been supplying the brand's products for many years.
