The intersection of medicine, art, philosophy, education and vectors
This book on the works of Venezuelan artist, Beatriz Inglessis, is a catalog, an essay, a guide to art education and a meditation on medicine, philosophy, and visual arts. It has pieces like DOPAMINE, which abstractly illustrates how a gambling high is created in the brain. It's difficult to categorize this lovely book, written in both japanese and english but there is much to contemplate in its dense prose and beautiful illustrations. "Have you had moments when you were looking at your hand and realized that that is your hand? These moments are the ones I'm talking about. They are absolutely weird and profound, and we take them for granted." Ms. Inglessis grew up with a father who was a cardiologist and a mother who was a gynecologist. As a child she was just as likely to read Snow White as she was to read a book on anatomy. The book makes you see the beauty in physicality in new and different ways. One of the most unusual things I've read, digested, stared at in a long time. I've know Beatriz for a year now so I'm not completely objective in reviewing her work, but it as mysterious and elegant as the woman herself. Even if you remove the artist out of the equation, there is much to think about in these pages. Best read slowly while lingering over the words and pictures. JG Ballard would have loved this book.
