Q: Why does it smell n how to get rid of it?

The smell of ours was terrible. I tried spraying it with Febreeze--that did not help. I actually washed it in the washing machine with several different detergents and used Downey, that put it outside to dry. So far the smell is much better--I hope it lasts. The original smell was just horrible. I thought it would eventually wear off, but it didn't.

Q: Is this somewhat water repellent? or is it more of a microfiber that will absorb spills? i'm looking for one that looks like cowhide but will not absorb spills. thank you so much in advance :)

It's smooth like leather and very water resistant.

Q: Does anyone else have issues with these pillow cases “vacuum sealing” flat when you use them?

Yes. I just received mine. Put the pillow insert in it and proceeded to lean back on it. I could hear all the air going out of it. When I took a look at it, it was very flat and "vacuum sealed" as you described. I have to unzip it to let air back in. I am returning it.
