The Great Gatsby (American Classics)

Good book, terrible version
Don't purchase this kindle version. At 49%, the font goes tiny, the paragraphs become riddled with mistakes, and you will be very confused as to what is going on. It took me several pages to realize the story had ended at 49% and I was reading a mangled version that started all over from the beginning. Needless to say, it ruined my experience

Loved that I was surprised
I had never read this classic and refused to see the movie until I had read it. It wasn't at all what I expected. I love to be surprised by books, love the way it is written, definitely recommend.

S4 case
I really like this case, it's easy to take off and on, it stays clean (no darkening from use) it wipes clean easy and has just a wee bit of stickiness to keep it from sliding around on smooth surfaces. The earphone hole works great, the plug fits without taking the case off. The charger fits just fine as well. I've dropped my phone a couple of times and the lip of the case has kept the screen from making contact with the ground. The openings for the power button and volume are kinda deeper than I was used to with other cases, but I've gotten used to it. I liked the choice if colors and will probably get one or two more.

Another time and place
I had always wondered about this story no having read it. I suppose in its day the things that brought the rich people together, were very much like this. Free spirits caught up in their own web of deceit and frustration over WANT!!!

I didn't realize this was a children's book when I bought it for my teen who needed it for school. I needed to re-order however she read this book while waiting for the full version. In the end, she said she was glad she read this one first because it gave a very direct and clear description of what was going on that when she read the original version it was easier to understand.

Quick Classic
Finally got around to reading this classic. It's a very quick read, and beautifully written. Not sure I would put it in the top ten of all time, as many literature lovers do, but I enjoyed the story.

I loved its descriptive language
The imagery presented in the language was awesome in my opinion- he captures with authenticity the mood and the aura surrounding gatsby’s story- I felt the narrators voice and emotions as I read the ending

Good book to read in your free time. In my opinion it's better than the movie!

Still on UK school exam syllabi
I re-read TGG after more that 50 years because my grandson is reading it as a set book at A-level. I didn't take in its supposed significance all those years ago, and I don't now. Apparently it gained its early fame because it was distributed to the US armed forces in huge quantites during WWII. Those readers could probably appreciate the story of a young man from the wrong side of the tracks who had his emotional development held back by service overseas and coming into too much wealth. In 2018 the nearest equivalent is highly paid young footballers playing in forreign teams. It's a well constructed story told by a third person observer who maintains a necessary distance from the central emotional action. Readers have to do some work, and they should not be too shocked at the anti-semitism of 70+ years ago, revealed when we find out where the money came from. Why is it still on exam syllabi? I'm not sure. Perhaps its a classic - one of the books that everyone knows they should read but . . .

Clearly not proofread
Whoever proof read the kindle version should be sacked. The word name is replaced with I'd, leading to surid (surname) and touridnt (tournament). And, as and English teacher, the continual 'should of' and 'would of' and 'could of' is completely unacceptable.I don't know what other words/sentences are wrong as I don't have another copy to compare, but I'm not enjoying the book at all.

Avoid this edition as it is appallingly proof-read
Like other reviewers have noted, this particular version of this classic novel is a terrible edition. At first, using the word 'id' appeared to be some sort of F Scott Fitzgerald quirk. Eventually it becomes obvious that the word/letters spelling "name" had been replaced by the letters "id" in all situations ("...the man idd Gatsby" or references to Jordan playing in a "golf touridnt"). As we progress through the book, and identities and names come more frequently, it's positively annoying. I'll be requesting a refund.

One of the best
It is hard to believe that this novel didn't get the credit it deserved during Fitzgerald's lifetime. On the surface, a simple story about wealth and what it does to people. Beneath the surface, an entire psychology of the era and a good insight into the lives (of a minority) of people living during those times. This is a worthy addition to anyone's book collection.

Very Dull
Classic case of a classic book which is revered by the critics, but in fact is dull, pompous, pretentious and has only the flimsiest of plots. Fitzgerald's editor, William Perkins apparently threw out the author's first attempt, saying it was "too vague"; Fitzgerald's second attempt was no better.
