Always love the mystery of the books
Slow character building and great mystery make for another great book. Reading book by book learn a little more each time about complex characters.

Non-stressful fun
Mercy Thompson is no Kate Daniels, but the series is still turning out to be lots of fun. It’s entertaining and relaxing. The story is interesting, the characters are likeable and there’s a little drama but nothing to get overly invested in. It’s not at all stressful which makes it the perfect series for escaping the pressures of real life. There is no sex, which is fine, and no cursing which is weird – especially since I didn’t notice until it was pointed out. For some reason, once I knew the lack of cussing was intentional, it annoyed me. Go figure. It was an affront to my potty mouth.“Stefan had done his dying a long time ago, so I saw no reason to be nice. “I answered the phone at”—I peered blearily at the red numbers on my bedside clock—“three o’clock in the morning.” Okay, that’s not exactly what I said. I may have added a few of those words a mechanic picks up to use at recalcitrant bolts and alternators that land on her toes”.There’s minimal romance, which again is fine. Even if I hadn’t cheated and looked ahead it’s obvious who the main squeeze will be. There’s just too much history with one wolf for him to be a serious contender, and it will never be the vampire, given the way vampires are presented in this series, which is why I think it should absolutely be the vampire – but it’s not.“I didn’t tell him that Stefan had kissed me—Stefan who had killed two people to save me”.“Adam smelled so good. He would never kill an innocent bystander— not even to save me”.Mercy wants the guy who’d let her die. To each their own I guess.Anywho, the story picks up with vampire Stefan cashing in on the favor Mercy owes him from book 1. It turns out there’s a sorcerer with a demon in him who’s also a vampire running around creating havoc (of the serial killing variety) and Stefan just needs Mercy to act as a witness when he goes to scope him out. Of course, it goes spectacularly badly and all the big bads are intent on sorting things out while the little coyote stays at home, until the big bads are indisposed and the little coyote has to save the day, then take care of unfinished business. Mercy is just starting to figure out the breadth of her preternatural abilities and it seems to be turning out that being a shapeshifter is pretty cool.

Can’t Get Enough!
First read 10/5/15 as I borrowed the book from a library. I reread this book again on 6/7/24 in preparation of my epic reread of Patty’s books for the new Mercy book coming in June. I absolutely love Patty’s writing and her Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series. I love the story, the world, and all the characters. Patty is one of my all-time favorite authors. Let the reread continue!

Action packed
So good. And the twists that will come from this later. One of the things I like about these books is that although Mercy is the strong, independent female character, she doesn't just go off and do stupid things. She gets help and uses her connections. It makes it so much better. She doesn't hate men either, using it as an excuse to keep the story moving and justifying stupid behavior. Also, her instincts are not always right. Not a big fan of reverse harems, especially when the charcuterie isn't anything to write home about and keeps reminding you of that, but this stops just shy of being that.Such an easy read with so much going on.

Great supernatural suspense!
MY RATING SYSTEM5 stars--WOW4 stars--would read again3 stars--was good, won't read again2 stars--read it, but didn't enjoy it1 star--didn't finish, it was so awfulDo I need to read books before this one: no, but...Cliffhanger: noSUMMARYStefan calls Mercy at 3am to help him confront a sorcerer (vampire plus demon) at a hotel. Because Stefan is so powerful, he doesn't expect a problem, but asks Mercy to come as a coyote in a dog's harness to be his witness. They get there, Stefan senses no one else alive in the hotel except in the sorcerer's room. Littleton enchants Stefan, then messily kills a maid in front of him. His eyes turn predatory. Mercy can't get out of the harness and can't get the leash out of Stefan's hand. Littleton kisses Stefan with bloody lips, Mercy bites Littleton. Littleton throws her across the room, knocking her out. When she wakes, she's at home. Stefan says she must drink because she was bitten, he hopes by Littleton. Stefan remembers being in bloodlust. “The woman lay as I remember leaving her, and you were unconscious. I couldn't remember what happened to you. A memory lapse is not inconsistent with bloodlust. But bloodlust usually only dulls unimportant things. You are important to me, Mercedes. It occurred to me that you were not important to Cory Littleton. And that thought gave me hope while I drove us here.” He left a fist print in her Rabbit's dash.Mercy, accompanied by Warren and Ben, goes with Stefan to a vampire trial, where the Mistress, Marsilia, tasks Stefan with finding the sorcerer and bringing him to her within four weeks. She allows Stefan to choose another vampire to help him; he picks Daniel (new and sick) rather than Andre (Stefan's peer). Stefan will not allow Mercy to join him, taking instead the two werewolves.Mercy goes to work, greets Mrs Hanna, a ghost whose routine takes her walking by Mercy's garage. Inside, a reporter, Mr Black, offers Mercy a large wad of cash to answer questions about dating Adam, now that werewolves have gone public.EVALUATIONThis was is an intense plot. We learn a lot about vampires, menageries, and seethes. And politics: within seethes; within packs; and among all species. Getting the story solely from Mercy's point of view builds suspense because we don't have omniscience; it also protects us from being sympathetic to the villain. Shifting relationships is a big part of character development. I really like Mercy's undefined Christian faith, necessary I think in a story about evil.RECOMMENDATIONIf you like supernatural suspense with a touch of romance, this series is for you. It's not as intensely woven or far-reaching as either Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock series or Anne Bishop's Novel of the Others series, but it's close. Well done!FAVORITE QUOTESNever trust a mechanic who drives new cars. They’re either charging too much money for their work, or they can’t keep an old car running—maybe both.I’d rather fight a dozen black belts at the same time than one white belt. The devout belief that the world is explainable [by science] is both a terrible vulnerability and a stout shield. Evil prefers it when people don’t believe.[Zee sees her injuries] “What is the use of having a man in the house, if he cannot take care of you for a while?” “Mmm. I give up. What’s the use of having a man in the house?”“Get him for her. For that maid and for the others who should be with their loved ones tonight and not buried in the cold ground.” Stefan took my hand and bowed low over it, touching his lips to the back. “As my lady desires,” he said, sounding utterly serious. Why couldn’t the people I cared about just need someone to fix their cars? I could do that.My little Rabbit wasn’t alone [in the parking lot], but it looked worried among all the SUVs and trucks.Heroes can be found in unlikely places and persons—like mechanics who can turn into coyotes.A crucifix was the instrument of Our Lord’s death—I don’t know why people think a torture device should be a symbol of Christ. Christ was a willing sacrifice, a lamb, not a cross for us to hang ourselves on; or at least that’s my interpretation. If I ever become a serial murderer, I’ll be very careful to kill people in a pattern that centers around a police station—and not my home or work.“A man who will risk nothing for love is not a man.” Then he winked. “I’ll have her home before ten, though, just in case.”“A hungry werewolf is a cranky werewolf. Go eat something before you eat somebody.”Being stuffed inside an SUV with the three werewolves and the vampire was a new experience in testosterone.POSSIBLE TRIGGERS (spoilers)Sex: kissesLanguage: 0 F words, 0 Lord's name in vain, 0 S wordsViolence: vampire eating messily, brutal beatings, report of wife beating, arson, kidnappings, bar fight threat, ghosts, staking, beheading, attempted suicide
