Portsmouth Virginia

I admit that I’m logically and intuitively aware that I’m well outside the target audience of this kindlebook that is Images of America: Portsmouth Virginia by Dr. Robert Brooke Albertson because the only connection I have with Portsmouth Virginia was briefly being stationed there during part of 2008 because the aircraft carrier I was stationed on through the navy ( the USS Eisenhower) was located inside the Norfolk Naval shipyard for some navy ship work. Still, this kindlebook that I purchased from money made at my current job in 2019 has some interesting information to include: how the name of Portsmouth Virginia came about and some other history, a picture pertaining to Harborfest,a picture of a person with his family who was both a United States Senator and later held a leadership position at Old Dominion University, a picture of a ferry that used to exist that connected the downtowns of Norfolk Virginia and Portsmouth Virginia,a picture that is now part of the structure that is the fine arts campus of Tidewater Community College, and more.

What an excellent assortment of photos of Portsmouth, VA, from before the War Between the States to the 1960's. Excellent info is provided which includes the Confederate ironclad, CSS Merrimac, the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, and several of the older homes with heritage in the city. If you wish to add a Portsmouth, VA photo album to your library, it'll be difficult to find a "bigger bang for your buck".

This is a story of my hometown, and it was great to see all of the places I remember as a kid growing up in the 50's. It brought back such memories and showed the city has I remember it. Portsmouth is steeped in history and this book told of the past in great detail. This is a wonderful book and tells about the rich naval hertiage of the port city.
