I Expect You to Die
Has this disc for over a year now but just recently viewed it with my wife a couple of weeks ago.A very divisive Bond film, to my eyes I feel was executed really well. The action scenes are gripping from the 4x4 chase in Norway to the edge of your seat gunfight up the stairwell.Callbacks to previous Bond films are welcome and truly bring in the nostalgia. The send off was effective and well done. The only knock I have on this entry is Rami Malek's Safin which just fell flat. He never felt to me a like a legit threat.I just wish the writers gave Blofeld a better more effective role instead of writing him off

A very pleasant surprise....
That tagline may be a bit misleading, as I have had favorable experiences with all the Daniel Craig Bonds I've seen (I haven't seen them all); but this one I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I hadn't seen any reviews, had no glimmering even of what the general plot was or even any incidental moments. Aside from knowing it was his final outing in the role, I was going into this one completely cold. Which is why it took a bit for me to order a copy: other things had a higher priority, or had been on the back burner a longer time.So... I got it after a long day's work, was planning on only watching the teaser before going to bed... and ended up staying up well beyond what I should have, because I quickly got caught up in the experience. I've seen all but a small handful of the films in the franchise (about three total), and even with those I've seen bits and piecdes; and several of them I've seen again recently, beginning with a re-watch from the beginning. And this is where the "pleasant surprise" aspect came in. Not only was this a fine film on its own (a superb cast, excellent performances, cinematography that simply -- to use a common phrase -- frequently "took my breath away, it was so beautifully done, and a very fine story to tell, full of twists and turns, all amply prepared for, paced, and modulated), but it paid homage to its roots in a number of ways, from elements from the Craig years all the way back... even to the wonderful feeling of closing a circle which use of "We Have All the Time in the World" as both a line of dialogue and end-title music served to give. In short, while I won't be dogmatic about it, this may just be the best of the lot. Even if there were no more Bond films in the future, this has given us a lovely culmination of what has gone before, making of the entire series a nicely rounded (if quite long) story. And, in that sense,, too, it fits with Fleming's original books quite well... and that sort of accomplishment is a rare bird indeed.I expected to (more likely than not) enjoy it; but I certainly didn't expect the level of not only entertainment, but emotional and aesthetic satisfaction I got from the film, both on the level of the Bond franchise, and as a damned fine work of art as a film qua film. Kudos to all.
