Minka Lavery Ceiling Fan Minka Aire F787-Orb, 52"

The noise isn't great.
The good and badThe Good: Its a good quality fan, its has a very energy efficient DC motor with led lights (sold separately). It uses 33 watts for the fan on high, and 15 watts for the light. These are really low energy numbers. The purchase cost of this fan vs a cheaper AC model will be made up in a couple of years and over the lifetime of the fan, it will pay for itself many many times over. In my part of the country we pay 10 cents per KWh. So it saves me $60 a year vs an AC fan. Over 10 years that's $600. It looks nice, it has a very modern minimalist look to it. I really like the design. Its pretty easy to install, with one exception. It moves a lot of air and produces a nice wind. The light is super easy to install. It doesn't wobble, or make any clicking sounds. The Bad:Install - There are some real problems with this fan. During the install the remote receiver is difficult to put in place. The wires on it should be a bit longer. There are many wires that need to put crammed into a small space. Its very frustrating.Noise - The noise is the biggest issue. There are 2 different noises that make this fan a problem. I will do my best to explain them. The first noise sounds like a neighbor is running a lawn mover about 4 houses away while your windows are closed.. It has a very slight subtle small engine noise. This is by no means a deal breaker, but its there. It might be related to the DC motor this fan has, I really have no idea. The real issue is the blades. They are not flat, they have a weird bend in them. This is probably to maximize the air it pushes. From a purely physics stand point, it probably brilliant. However, it causes some real issues with air movement. I guess the word would be "buffering?" Im not really sure. The blades cause a thump as they spin. Its a really unsettling noise. I think the scoop of the blade may create an air build up and as it spins it constantly builds and releases this air, causing a thumping sound. This is similar to what you hear from a helicopter. It hurts my ears. Its not really loud, per say, its uncomfortable. This is a deal breaker. This fan is above my bed. If this was in a family room with a TV on, it might be fine. But when you are trying to sleep, its a problem. I think if they sold flat blades, it would solve this issue, but it would likely sacrifice air movement, dropping the fans specs down to a more common model. The light: The light is sold separately and not great. Its a snap in install, it you just plug it in and turn it. It doesn't require screws and wire nuts, just goes right in place, nice design. Its doesn't really cast a large amount of light, if you are under it its good enough, but in my bed room, it not ideal. It also doesn't come with the fan. Its another $75. I guess that's fine, it seems well built. It doesn't have a replaceable light. If it burns out, i think you need to replace the entire thing. If i'm incorrect on this, someone please note that. The fan does something weird, which im told its normal. It takes a second to start up. It may turn backward for a little too upon start up. its not broken, this is normal and expected behavior.I will be returning this fan, as for me, its unusable. But I can't fault the general quality of Minka fans, this might just be a one off with this model.

Great While it Lasts But Doesn't Last Long!
I purchased this Minka Aire ceiling fan two years ago. If I had rated it two months ago I would have given it 5 stars because it worked beautifully and was very quiet. HOWEVER, after only two summers of use, it suddenly stopped working. Emailing Minka was a waste of time. They responded within 24 hours each time but the responses were minimal, unhelpful and the last one didn't complete sentences so I wasn't sure what they were trying to say. So then I called them. That was somewhat helpful in that they told me I probably needed a new receiver (which is what the remote talks to in the fan.) They told me the part number and gave me a suggestion for Dominion Electric, a local company that could order it from them for me. (I couldn't get it from Minka directly and it wasn't available on Amazon.) I called Dominion who charged me $58.80 for the part and said it would arrive in one to one and a half weeks. One and a half weeks later, it still hasn't shipped from Minke. With our current east coast heat wave with 100 degree heat and heat indexes up to 115 this coming weekend, I was not trilled to hear that I probably won't see the part for another WEEK. So is it surprising that I've lowered my rating to 1 star? I strongly feel that this fan that cost hundreds of dollars should have lasted for longer than two summers without having to invest more time and money into it. We were thinking about replacing the ceiling fan in another room with a similar Minka fan, but at this point, I have zero interest in purchasing another fan from this company.

WTF is up with these bad reviews?
If you are looking for a fan with high CFM, look no further. If you don't like the sound of your fan kicking the air's butt and keeping you cool, look elsewhere. This is, hands down, the best fan for moving air. We have 2 on our patio and couldn't be happier. DC motor, great looks, keep us cool. Get one, unless the sound will bother you. I'm not sure how a fan can move so much air and keep you cool without a bit of 'whoomp, whoomp', but if you find one, let me know.

Nice fan - very attractive except for the cheap fake wood plastic blades
I love the fan. I bought it because I thought it was attractive and because it has a reverse direction button on the remote. I want to be able to exhaust hot air by reversing the direction with out having to climb up and flip a switch. It is efficient and quiet and I do think it is very attractive. The only feature I don't like about it is the cheap fake wood plastic blades. I painted mine flat black. I wish they gave you a few options for blades such as flat black, fake wood plastic or real wood laminate (realizing there would be an extra charge for that).

Fan-tastic
Great little fan! Assembly led and installed with a minimum of fuss and was perfectly balanced right out of the box (shocking I know)! For its size it moves a LOT of air with very little noise, until late you German to the faster speeds then it sounds like a tornado just hit the room and it definitely makes all the dust bunnies fly around the room, did I mention that it moves a lot of air?
