Rogue Stars: Skirmish Wargaming in a Science Fiction Underworld (Osprey Wargames, 17)

Quirky, tedious, fun, cumbersome..
The game is pretty simple. The premise is amazing. The editing is horrid. This feels like it was conceived in a weekend and Andrea and co just rushed it to the printers before any playtesting or thought to layout was done. I was hoping it would be sci-fi Frostgrave but it is, from release, in need of a second edition to include all of the things that were very quickly pointed out in the Facebook group as shortcomings (including errata and FAQ).That said, this game is still worth a look. If you can deal with extremely bad layout (seriously, there is so much wasted space per page, this thing could've been a pamphlet). You will also need to dig through the Facebook group for the official errata and FAQ plus some additional gear. I would buy a revised edition tomorrow if it included all of these things and they cleaned up the layout.Of note: There are numerous scenarios that require specific terrain elements. If you don't enjoy that sort of thing, this might also not be for you.. but if you like the extra weekend projects, pick it up :D

The rules are intuitive and easily learned. The artwork is excellent there is a lot of imagination that goes into this game and it's fast and quick to play only about 30 to 45 minutes per session. Anyone who is looking for a quick pick up should get this game. You won't be disappointed if you like small-scale Skirmish style combat. Aces all around!

Great, simple set of rules for miniature games
Great, simple set of rules for miniature games. I have been recommending this to anybody who likes small warband skirmish games and wants to play a SiFi game or 10. My only complaint with the rules is the campaign system or rather, the surprisingly short. Given how well though out the rest of the book seems to be I can only hope that an expansion is planned that will fill out the campaign section.

a great buy
This book is very cool. It allows the use of any miniature in your collection. The rules are a bit to get a handle on so if you need help check for me at my forum at spectrestudios.us. We cover it! We are also going to do videos on it. Company delivered it in mint condition, was very pleased

Better for adult players
Good book but a bit more complicated than the kids I’m trying to teach could follow easily.

Great set of generic Sci Fi Skirmish Rules
Lets you play with whatever figs are in your collection, easy to play, handy rules. Highly recommended and great for an evening game with friends!

Skirmish game with campaign progression
I grew up a huge fan of games like Mordheim and Necromunda. This game definitely fulfilled that niche. The ease of customising every single character in your list was a unique experience. Most games don't go into that level of detail.

Has some nice options but its rather fiddly and fussy.
On the surface this seems initially a great concept. Unfortunately the Dark side is in the detail. The combat system requires placement of a large number of markers down for stress, wounds etc. Also, the reaction system requires the rolling of multiple dice every time someone takes an action...and more if they actually shoot someone !This makes the action rather slow in practice, and the game can easily drag or bog down ,especially when dealing with new players. On the plus side there are all sorts of options for your miniatures, and the scenario generator is also good. While I dont regret buying it, I expect I'll be playing Death Ray Lasers or Frostgrave far more often than this game. Both are far more elegant designs.

Disappointing.
I was really looking forward to this having enjoyed many of the other Osprey wargame books that have recently come out. However I was disappointed with this one. I would of preferred to give 2 1/2 stars, but there you go. I dont like this set of rules, but I dont hate them. There are many good things about them, but the bad things just out weigh them. My main problem is the huge amount of tokens/clutter on the table top. Yes, you could use cards for each character and keep the table clear, but then you still have the massive amount of modifiers from the game stats and every token you have out. The book has some great ideas, but does suffer slightly from the Osprey small book format - much has been missed out due to space considerations. I suggest you try this out, if you can, before you buy or pick it up on offer...

Cool game
Okay the book isn't fancy, but for the price you are getting a complete game which has loads of options. The game is pretty quick paced and is fun (once you have learnt the basics of play). You might need to flip back and forth a bit but thats with any game. Use with pretty much any models. Prefer it to kill team. The way activations work is very cool and makes a change from the traditional turn based games.

Osprey rule books are very good
I haven't tried this one out yet, but reading through it looks very well thought out and playable. Looking forward to playing it when i have another gamer to try it out.

Solid, quick sessions, fast action and tactical depth.
Great game with multiple replayability. Allows for long term campaigns and multiple setups. Game is fast paced and allows for action pacted moments, without losing the tactical side of things. Campaign rules and injuries add a lot of depth and flavour to characters over a long period of games, or just ignore them for casual one shots.
