I only cried twice!
I want to start by saying that I was confident that I could assemble this pergola my self (single female ) I am a former landlord so learned to be very handy at home maintenance of all types, lets just say I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty. This looked like a straight forward project, and most of the reviews bragged about how simple and fast it was to assemble. I can only say that I'm glad most of you had a good time....I did not!It was a big challenge for me, and even though it is possible for one person to assemble, it will take you about three times as long! It took me 4 hours and I could see that with two people it should take no more than an hour. The next challenge was the pictorial instructions that came with it. A bunch of lettered diagrams with dotted lines, circles, arrows, etc . Let's just say, you will figure it out but it will take some time.I have the pergola erected, but the canopy still has me confused. It"s up there, but incorrectly, I had to leave it and walk away. ( To look for a Xanax ) The other thing I have to mention right now is be mindful of which way you want the canopy to open and close, from right to left, ot left to right. Of course, I set mine up the opposite way that I wanted, it will be an easy fix to turn the pergola around the next time I have 3 people over. In the mean time, I will live with it.A couple of other things, and I know it has been mentioned in another review. You will receive a dark grey pergola with a cream colored canopy. It looks really nice, but I bought it for sun protection. I live in Las Vegas. The sun here is killer. I would have preferred a darker canopy for the shade factor. Not sure a canopy this light will provide the shade I'm looking for... but it is what it is.I also noticed some scratched paint on the pergola right out of the box (easy fix with spray paint, but shouldn't have to ) and the cream colored canopy gets dirty, don't let it touch the ground during assembly.Beyond that it seems substantial. As you can see by the picture I posted, it is too big for my patio and one side of it is on rocks. Looks like it works fine...knock on wood.My yard is a work in progress, but I will post a picture of my results with the canopy retracted. If some kind soul out there can respond with the correct way to attach the canopy, I would sure appreciate it! Great price, overall nice product...assembly not for the faint of heart!UPDATE: The Good News, I got the Canopy installed! The Bad News, it's just way too windy here for this type of set up. Throughout the day we can go from calm winds to 35mph winds, and the Canopy takes on a life of it's own. The pergola itself seems fine in the wind but I have decided to use a different method of shading from the structure. I am ordering those accordion style lattice panels with fake ivy and will attach them with twist ties underneith the crossbars. I will use the installed hooks to hang plants or other chochkies from the crossbars. A friend had done this with her wooden pergola and it actually provided shade and looked pretty awesome. I did not want to spend more money on this, but I do not want to send it back either. So keep in mind how windy it is in your area before ordering. I will try to post pics of the final outcome.UPDATE#2: Now that I've had this Pergola for a while and been able to observe the durability in different weather conditions, here is my report. If you have high wind conditions in your area, you will need to take extra precautions to protect the Pergola. We just had a desert dust storm last week with winds as high as 65 mph. I tied the pergola to a fence next to it, which was the only solution I could come up with at the moment. It is still standing, but it actually swayed back and forth to the point where I though the support posts might bend and collapse. There has to be a solution better than staking the support posts to the ground. The ground stakes supplied are not long enough, you need something that is about 12 or 16 inches long that actually screw into the ground. The rocking motion in the wind puts a lot of wear on the joints where the posts connect to the cross bars, I think eventually the hardware holding it together could fail. I really think the manufacturer could add some decorative corner supports to solve this problem. In fact, I am looking for something like that to add to mine. It is very nerve racking when the wind kicks up and you are afraid of structural failure. It wasn't so much a matter of it taking off in the wind as much as collapsing. If I eventually decide to replace this one, I will spend more money and get one of the heavy wooden ones.

Terrible
Please do not waste your money. We had missing parts, holes that were not threaded for screws and directions that show wrong parts for what they were labeled. The diagrams were terrible also. I had to order an essential part and I could not do it over the phone, they wanted an email with all the order info. The part was cheap but necessary, just send it to me like other companies I have bought from.

Looks great
This took four hours to assemble with my husband n I. The instructions are pictures so yes not too easy to follow u have to have patience n organize everything carefully before u start. Prepare yourself to have to take something apart n put it back together. However, it looks great n our back yard. We live in Nevada high winds n it’s stood the test. Lots of compliments on it. We did weigh it down in potting plants with 40 lb of rocks in each.

DO NOT BUY
I bought this POS on April 2 assembled it on April 7 and it was blown over in a thunderstorm on April 15. It is top heavy so the nails ripped out of the metal and twisted the legs. I live in SC so it's not like we get hurricanes or tornado force winds. Only positive is it didn't break any windows. Item is the cheapest hollow material. The manufacturer did not respond to any form of contact to rectify the issue. Basically throw away $400 and save UPS the trouble of delivery and yourself the trouble of setting it up.
