Personal experience
As a child, maybe age 10 yrs old, while traveling from Detroit to Arkansas, my Dad stopped at a small non descript restaurant . Our shoe box of Fried Chicken and' lite' Bread was long gone. We had previously stopped at a Piggly Wiggly for Bologna and Saltine Crackers.( This was in the '60 's and the total travel time by car was approximately 24 hrs.) My Dad decided he would treat us to a Hamburger. While my Dad, after placing his order at the 'to go' window and then proceeded to wait for the order at the REAR window where 'Colored' were required to wait for their order, I had my head out the window of the back seat, thirsting for fresh air and anxiously waiting my Hamburger. I remember an older White Couple (whose car was much older than ours, pulled up, saw that we were Black (Colored) The look of hatred on their face as they looked at this little' Colored' without saying a word, caused me to cringe and retreat . I will be 74 yrs old in a few weeks and the hatred in their faces still haunts me. Is this what is called scarred? because over the years I have relived that moment. This particular Segregation sign has special meaning to me.
