2013 album from the San Francisco-based Heavy Rock band. Musically, Orchid owe their sound to the grand masters of Rock. They walk in the footsteps of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and even Pink Floyd - they certainly are generating abundant exhilaration wherever they roam. This musical genre, the mix of Blues, Folk and Hard Rock, was surely the most widespread bravura in the early '70s, and those legendary acts mentioned above would easily fill stadiums even today. Their timeless music has survived decades of trends and fashions.

Killer follow up to Capricorn, from SanFran doom masters!
After being blown away by Capricorn, I had to get Mouths of Madness. It seems a little more up tempo and progressive. Guitar riffing and leads still top notch, killer bass, solid drumming. Theo Mindell delivers another strong vocal performance.9 songs,56 minutes in length. Production and sound quality A-1. Great mix of song styles, the Mouths of Madness, Silent One, Mountains of Steel, Leaving it All Behind, Wizard of War among my faves. Can listen to, start to finish. Kind of reminds me of Sabbaths 3rd,4th and 5th records. Everybody draws influence from somebody. Stones, Cream, Yardbirds, Zeppelin and A LOT of others took from the old school blues masters. So please, take it easy on Sabbath rip off references. Be thankful there are newer bands that put out records in the style of great early 70s hard rock. Stoner/Doom rules, Rock On!

Best Sabbath-like band on the planet. Superb.
I'll start this review by saying this is not "doom" metal, and Black Sabbath was never a "doom" metal band. Black Sabbath has obviously inspired the existence of "doom" metal but their roots, from my understanding, is in jazz. And you can actually hear it in their early live albums like "Past Lives". Anyways... Orchid has done and continues to create the classic "Sabbath sound" by borrowing "Sabbath" riffs, and making them their own by cleverly blending and mixing up tempo's in fantastic song arrangements. It also helps that their vocalist is a perfect combination of Ozzy, Dio, never overdone and yet still this dude has his own style. Their previous release "Capricorn" is fantastic. Mouths Of Madness is just as good. Keep it up Orchid. Don't change a thing. Your "formula" is perfect.

My favorite album from one of my favorite modern doom metal ...
My favorite album from one of my favorite modern doom metal bands. Of all the retro bands, these guys sound the most like Sabbath. That's not saying their a rip-off band. They've got the Sabbath formula and they use it well with a little trash mixed in for good measure. Best songs are Mouths of Madness, Silent One, Nomad, and Mountains of Steel. Very dark and doomy. Highly recommended for those who are into the retro metal revival. Also check out Capricorn from these guys.

Early 'SABBATH with Blackie Lawless anyone?
Thank the Devil, there is a New wave of "old-school-CLASSIC-Rock" sounding Bands coming out! I ordered this Album after reading a review in "Classic Rock" Magazine on just "How they were described". And I am Very Pleased to tell ANYONE who is interested, that these guys have Not ONLY "The Sound" of The Glory-Days...but The Songs as well. Great writing with Cool song-titles, great Riffage that Iommi would be proud of ..(Master of Reality & Vol 4 era)..in style especially! In fact i couldn't help but chuckle happily as "THAT STYLE" kept comin' at me..he he. The only main difference being, instead of an "Ozzy" sounding Singer....he actually sounds quite a bit like Blackie Lawless from W.A.S.P.! Great stuff Guys! Anyone who buys this album, looking for "That style"..Won't be disappointed. Long Live "THAT STYLE!" Crank 'em & enjoy!!

RAWKIN!
This new album is excellent! Their Capricorn album is one of my favorites but this new one has some really sweet melodies on it. They really stretched their scope of tones on this one. The bass just rolls , some awesome piano in here , organs , all kinds of great sounds for your ears! Your stereo will love you if you play this on it!

Another great album from Orchid
Orchid is one of the few bands in my music collection where I enjoy most if not all of the music. All of Orchid's albums have been a blast. The Mouths of Madness is no exception. As many folk have said, if you like Black Sabbath's early work, you'll enjoy Orchid.

Sounds more like Black Sabbath than the new Black Sabbath "13" album does!
Great sound to the album! A throwback to the dark and heavy sound of the early seventies. If you like early Sabbath and miss that sound, you will like this, and their earlier album, "Capricorn". Can't wait to see Orchid live in concert now!

The Mouths of Madness" trägt.

Retro Nirvana !
There have been many bands that have passed through the Doom Metal genre and made a big impression. They are many that have become forgotten. But this isn't the case for this band.Orchid are from San Francisco and what I like about them is that they've stayed loyal to the roots of doom metal and taken it back to where it was created. That's right - with Black Sabbath. And there was nothing more seminal than the output of Mr Osbourne, Butler, Ward and Iommi. It is evident from the first track that the lead singer has based his vocal range on Ozzy Osbourne, but that isn't a problem. In fact what you have with this band is a retro sound that wouldn't be out of step with 1970, and that is where they've based themselves. Back in that era. Even right down to their dress-sense. And for that alone they have my profoundest respect.Orchid is beyond just 'Doom Metal'. They also hint at 'Stoner Riffs', too, and I'm sure they'll get a great fan-base from that sector of the metal scale also.Today's heavy metal has strayed away from what it's all about. Most rock bands don't even look like rock bands. In fact they look like short-haired male models that have just done a brief stint with ASOS. Many don't even sound like rock bands but dodge behind the shaky term of 'Nu Metal'.Orchid are a breath of fresh air. They produce a real heavy metal sound and vehemently stand by it. I have bought their first two EPs on ITunes and their first two albums. And I have not had one single regret at any of those purchases.I know they'll forever be linked and compared to Black Sabbath but that is a plus. Rhino Bucket had the same issue when they were compared to AC/DC, but so what? Let's be ultimately grateful that there are bands like Orchid that are carrying the standard into a new century, and may they too, spawn a myriad of emulators.Orchid are a contemporary Doom Metal/Heavy Metal band at its very best. And I think they're all ready on their way to joining the pantheons of rockers that came before them. This album is excellent and if you like Black Sabbath, you'll like this.

Excellent.
