I'm a martial arts instructor and also teach self defense to groups. I usually demonstrate the metal spike on a key chain and the benefits of it as a self-defense weapon. The antlers are much more practical. They're not as big and heavy as the spikes but big enough to do what you need. Most of my self-defense classes are taught to women's groups and I encourage them to have their keys in their hand before leaving the store and the antler is just less cumbersome to handle or hang from your ignition switch.

The antlers where mostly a gift and the person loved them! They are pretty sturdy since the person who received them opened a beer with the little antler and seems to be holding up. :)
