I watched part of season one way back when and was not intrigued. But I went back and watched the whole series and continue to watch. Sometimes the scripts feel false, but the quality of the acting rescues the few missteps. Jon Voight is a joy to watch; if you can separate from being fascinated by the character of Mickey Donovan, it is easy to see that each performance is an acting clinic. The same for Hank Azaria who plays crazy so well. Liev Shreiber's intensity and timing are exquisite; it took a season or half-way into season two, but he has created a fully developed conflicted character who wavers between sociopath, scared boy, and compassionate father and husband without missing a beat. This is the mark of a true artist; the ability to grow incrementally in a role is the sign of maturity and Shreiber is there. This is quality television that rivals anything on film in the area of character development.

Ray is at his best. Love the extra conflicts with his past behaviors and how he wants to be now. It is a guess how he will fix issues instead of just the bag or bat mentality. Live Schreiber is at his best. I loved him as Zeus in Defiance. His dynamics with his family is intriguing. How will he react when he finds out about Abbys breast cancer. One thing he can't fix or change. So addictive. I hate flying but this got me to and from Arizona easily because I was so absorbed. The an sitting next to me asked what I was watching as we were leaving the plane. He was absorbed even without the dialogue. Marisol if you are a medical person is a cannabis based medication given to cancer patients to help with appetite and nausea. Perfect name for that character

As a series, Ray Donovan started very slowly with tired tropes of the Boston Irish of Southy as drunk, bruising brutes with Catholic Priest issues and a foul thug of a father. But over time it has grown into compelling TV and has dealt with these known issues with some freshness and originality. I've always found Liev Schreiber a compelling Actor ever since I first saw him portray Orson Welles in RKO 281.Being strongly based in Catholicism, it's hard not to notice a strong theme of Forgiveness hidden among the acts of vengeance and violence. Which will win out. If recent trends of the Genre' win out, then it cannot end well. But for once wouldn't it be nice to see the better angels win out?

I hate to give this show five stars. This is the show I can't resist watching even though I KNOW it's STUPID, the situations are totally absurd, there could NEVER be such a family of absolute losers who would live much longer than a few years. But Liev & Voight carry the show with outstanding performances. Liev is a REALIST living in a fantasy world of ridiculous numbskulls, including his ENTIRE FAMILY. Voight is one of the most outrageously DUMB CRIMINALS ever to grace the screen. So DUMB you eventually begin to feel sorry for him (his character) as he begins to reveal a heart underneath his otherwise TOTALLY SELFISH actions.I know the show is STUPID but somehow the writers have outsmarted me, because I keep watching.

Often it seems the best seasons of a series are the first two. If you've put up with the incessant and (to me) entertaining drama of the Donovans for 3 seasons you are likely to enjoy the 4th season at least as much. It's a strong continuation. True, no normal human confronting the back to back challenges of these characters could survive more than two episodes in a good week. But I seem not to care about this. The writing is great, Ray is compelling and the production and all other actors deliver in style. Glad this series can sustain so well creatively; and why hasn't it been recognized with an Emmy???

I love this show.... I watched all seasons back to back one after the other! I couldn't even wait to wake up the next morning to continue watching! I stayed up till the sun came up, I fell asleep and turn Ed the tv back on as soon as I woke up! This show has you on edge every moment of the show! This is one that did not get boring if anything it was very addicting! Very realistic and very intertanig! I would recomend this show for all adults. Not so much for children but I believe any adult could appreciate this show! It's very well made.. Hats off to the creators! Please continue the show.....

Brilliantly written storyline. Great actors. Gripping plot.

Mir haben alle bisherigen Serien sehr gut gefallen. Diese war meine erste vorbestellte und ich wurde nicht enttäuscht.Ray hat wie immer viele Herausforderungen gleichzeitig zu meistern und behält die Kontrolle. Es kommt keine Langeweile, anders als in anderen Serien, auf. Die Spannungskurve stürzt nicht ab und die Hauptcharaktere spielen weiter mit. Man möchte gar nicht mehr aufhören, weiterzuschauen.PS: Diese Staffel negativ zu bewerten aufgrund dessen, dass sie lediglich auf DVD erscheint, halte ich für verwerflich. Jeder unbedarfte Stöberer sieht jetzt auf den ersten Blick eine negativ bewertete Staffel und wird sich aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach nicht weiter mit dieser super Serie befassen. Somit sinken die Absatzzahlen und die Serie wird irgendwann eingestampft. Danke dafür!Fazit:Selbst wenn aufgrund dieser negativen Bewertungen Staffel 5 auf VHS erscheint, werde ich sie mir kaufen.
