They definitely need to be washed and you will see how dirty they are.
Normal seeds, but very dirty, so I soak them overnight, wash them several times and change the water, then dry them in the oven.

Decline in Freshness and Quality
The last 3 times I have orderd this item, the pistachios have been stale. They taste old and lack the flavor that they should have. Very Disappointing! I will not order them again.
