Hair in Funny Places

Funny, Informative, Kids loved it
I read it to my 6 yr old and 10 yr old boys. They loved the hair in funny places and giggled at penises but also listened and liked that everyone was different. We needed to have a quick talk about semen (I've never talked about that part with them so that was the only thing they were confused about/wanting to know about). My 6 yr old and 9 yr old girls briefly listened to some. 9 yr old (who's scared of blood....) said gross at the bleeding and was done. I wish I could stop the inevitable. LOL overall great intro book into puberty and a good place to start with very simple and correct information presented with humor and fun illustrations.

Simplified Explanation of Puberty
I started puberty in elementary school and my LO is displaying signs early too. The simple explanations and cartoonish aspects are perfect. Not to mention she is on the spectrum so all the pictures really helped her understand. I'm so glad I bought this book and just thankful there was something available on her level.

Light hearted intro to puberty
I bought this on the recommendation of a mother with sons older than mine. My son was 10/11 at the time and she thought it was an amusing way to pave the way for a more serious discussion. It was too simplistic for him and he pooh-poohed it, but my 6/7 year old daughter was fascinated by it. Now that she's 9 and facing these issues herself, it's helpful for us to use this book as a non-threatening explanation of what's happening with her. I think it's successful because she did have the earlier introduction to it.Witty and light-hearted, it still is factual and clear. Definitely worth using.

This book lightens the intense feelings puberty has. It's educational with a sense of humor.
I love this book. You've got to have a sense of humor about it. I won't show my niece til she's 12. My nephew is 13 and very mature, so he was able to laugh at the book but also get educated. I had no puberty education when I was young and the things happening to my body scared me. I didn't tell anyone. I wish someone would have showed me a book like this so I would have known what I was going through was normal and I was ok.

Inappropriate
Not appropriate for younger girls. It’s great about the female body but the male part...”his penis is thickens and white stuff comes out so he’s ready to have a baby” not ok for my kids. Wish I never bought it. Too late to return and I don’t know anyone I’m willing to give it to.

-10This is a great little book that explains puberty in a humorous way to middle-aged kids, ages 7
I loved the illustrations. The book is written in a very simple format, easy to understand. I think if it were given as a gift, the giver should make sure that the parents of the child reaching the book has approved it. Some parents might think it was inappropriate for their children.

A bit scary, white, heteronormative
The book depicts hormones as ugly, dirty monsters inside your body. Not exactly a great start. I assumed it was just about girls (as it only has a girl on the cover), but it cover boys and girls equally. My five-year-old daughter picked it out to have me read to her, and I was comfortable with the level of nudity and explicitness. Sperm and erections are brought up, but not pictured. He three-year-old brother poked his head in and had a question or two, but mostly wasn't interested. Two other weaknesses are that every single character in the book is white. Not just the two adolescents featured. And hormones cause them to be attracted to the opposite sex, with no room for other experiences of adolescence and sexual attraction.

A good launching pad for a first discussion about puberty
I think my 9 year old son was less uncomfortable than he would have been, because I used this book as a launching pad to tell him about puberty. He didn’t have to look at me—he could look at the book. I’m glad the book covers girls & boys-it’s good for kids to know that the other half of the population goes through (embarrassing) changes, too.

Ideal para preadolescentes
Un libro muy divertido, ideal para los y las preadolescentes que empiezan a notar algún cambio en el cuerpo y tienen preguntas. Ilustraciones y texto fantásticos. No esperaba menos de un libro de Babette Cole.

as she likes reading and seems to absorb information better via the books and pictures i scoured the web ...
My little girls 8 and developing faster than expected, puberty is a hard subject to discuss with a girl of her age, yes i have explained periods, hair, breasts and mood swings but she still looked puzzled, as she likes reading and seems to absorb information better via the books and pictures i scoured the web for a suitable book, i read reviews on several and this seemed the best option as it incorporated some humor but it still has explained what's happening to her, i have told her until she can read the girls bit without any mistakes she isn't allowed to read the boy's bit and she can only read it with mum as i think she's still a bit small to know both sides yet. But it is a good book for both girls and boy's in my opinion. Each child absorbs information differently so if your child is like mind and learns better by visual and written aids then it's ideal
