An American book
As a uk customer this book was disappointing- the fact that it is in American English was not mentioned in the product description on Amazon Uk. American terms, spellings and products - includes Semi-trucks, get-go, trash, Graham crackers, Nashville Hot Chicken, Silly Putty, smart dust, the cockspur gas burner, Tidy Cat kitty litter. Quite interesting content but the intro to each product is I feel a bit cheesey and forced. Colourful cover, black and white pages, up to date ( mentions Covid-19).

Slim book with many chapters of accidental inventions. Can be picked up and read in short bursts or at length. Good to encourage reading.

Fun facts for middle-grade readers
This book is for an older, more sophisticated and confident reader than several of the other Riddleland books I have seen. Each segment is a few pages and the format is of sparking a relatable incident or situation to the child's life and then drawing a parallel with the inventor or developer of an idea. The culmination is revealing the current naming or identity of the invention or product. The diversions into history and the development or repurposing of items is interesting and I can imagine children of similar ages swapping stories or trying to outdo each other in the most surprising or cleverest example.A wide range of topics and items are covered so should have sufficient to please a similarly wide range of readers' interests or preferences. It was an encouraging gesture to include at the end the assertion that the author is confident that the reader will invent something themselves one day An extensive reference list to all the items is given at the end of the book for any reader wanting to learn more.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
