I have used these with a Dragonfly Cobalt DAC/Amp and a Fostex HPA4 DAC/Amp. Both drive it well, the Fostex, of course drives it better. By better, they both can get loud, but the Fostex can get louder (to the point of uncomfortable) without distortion, and it allows for better volume control. As I wrote in my full review, these should be able to be driven with a mobile device, though I'd recommend at least a portable DAC/Amp like the Dragonfly. I can't test this because I have all apple devices, and none of them have a 3.5mm port :(

how do they compare to the bose quiet comfort 45 SE?

I am not really the best person to ask about Bose as I dont really like their products and mostly on basis of sound quality. I generally find Bose a bit muddy and unbalanced. However, these Denon headphones are beautiful both inside and out and sound quality is worth more than the cost to me. I have been listening to all kinds of music for a very long time. 10/10

What are these like compared to the fostex tr-x00 range form masdrop?

No idea.. haven't used the fostex. The AH-5200, though, are outstanding. One of the best I've ever used.
