What a great book to learn about Chinese New Year! I am Chinese and still learned something new reading this book! It was interesting to know how different countries and cities celebrate this festival as well. I love the instructions at the end for different activities and the dumpling recipe as well! I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn more about this special festival.

Amazing book!
A wonderful book to teach young readers about the customs and traditions associated with the Chinese New Year. I welcomed this book in our homes with open arms, as I love books that can help me show my daughter how beautifully-diverse her world is. We had so much fun reading it and I believe other kids will enjoy it just as much.We are lucky to live in a day and age where other cultures are so accessible, especially since there is so much information about each of them available. The book written by Eugenia Chu was a great read, enjoyed equally by myself and my daughter. We learned about the festive traditions associated with the Chinese New Year. Did you know it is also called the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year? I certainly didn’t!I loved how the book offered a wealth of interesting information on the history and folklore of the Chinese culture. The Chinese New Year is one of the most celebrated holidays around the world and, like any other major event, it comes with its own traditions. The author included some fun activities to keep children engaged, and it was so fun to see diverse traditions presented through a cool combination of storytelling and colorful illustrations. From festivals and parades, to food and cooking, this is the kind of book that will stay close to your heart.Even though my daughter is only four, she thoroughly enjoyed the book. Now, we have plans to make Chinese dumplings and, of course, a paper lantern. For me, as a parent, this book offered the added value of education. We are responsible for the way our children perceive the world and we need books like this one to teach them about diversity and traditions. We have the opportunity to show them how each culture celebrates major occasions, and even use the reading time to talk about similarities between various cultures. We loved this book! From the yummy dumpling recipe to the traditions associated with the Chinese New Year, we nestled comfortably between the pages, forgetting the passing of time. This book is great for kids and adults alike, it’s fun and educational, and it reminded me that all cultures have a thing in common: the joy of living! I especially loved the suggestion we should declutter before the holiday, so we can throw out the bad luck, and make room for the good luck.

Great beginning resource for learning about China
Celebrating Chinese New Year: History, Traditions and Activities, A Holiday Book for Kids, is Eugenia Chu’s fourth book as it relates to Chinese culture (make sure you check all of the others out!). In her previous books, Chu used a children’s story and characters to help flesh out basic ideas about the Chinese culture, and, unfortunately, few books like these exist in today’s book market. But this new book will fill a good-sized gap in many (kids and adults) understanding of the Chinese people. Often, we know about a culture only by through the channels of media, which carry a lot of baggage because of politics. Here, Chu writes skillfully without all the nonessentials of bias, and presents to the reader a fun, color filled, informative book that is sure to engage young and old alike. There are nine sections in this 40-page book, making it easy to look up topics such as China’s history, folklore, culture, celebrations, and much, much more. There are recipes you can use to cook Chinese Dumplings, or art projects like making paper Chinese Lanterns. The list can goes on and on. Celebrating Chinese New Year: History, Traditions and Activities, A Holiday Book for Kids, by Eugenia Chu is an absolute winner, and is certain to entertain and inform readers for many years to come.

Such an engaging way for children to learn all about the Chinese NY!
This book is such a fantastic resource, jam- packed with information presented in a really digestible format for kids to read independently, or as part of a theme at school, or home-learning. We loved learning about the cultural traditions, including why the number 4 is seen to be an unlucky number and why dragons are at the forefront of celebrations including all the different animals. There were fascinating facts, fun craft and cooking activities all centred around this worldwide celebration. Brilliantly done!
