A Very Good but Perhaps Overpriced Item
I once owned (and lost) this shovel and just purchased the Outdoor Products version of it at Walmart for $4.88. Except for the labeling and that the shovel is made in China (the case of both brands is made in China), the products look and perform almost identically.Having now sharpened the edge of both with a file to make digging and root cutting easier, it seems the Outdoor Products version is perhaps made of a bit softer steel. This may mean it's a bit less durable and abrasion resistant, but I can't imagine most people ever using a shovel of this type enough for this to be an issue. Considering that I could buy four of the Outdoor Products version for the same price, I'd say it's a far better value. As for the issue some people have had with the handle unlocking while in use, the shovel can be adjusted to prevent this. Just squeeze the handle (by hand if you're strong enough or in a vice) to remove it, bend the handle to spread it a bit and reinstall it. I was able to make both of my shovels almost immune to accidental unlocking, but be warned that this also makes them difficult to open and close. If the handle is spread too far and it becomes too tight, squeezing it in vice or the like until the ends touch should loosen it (this restored both of mine to about their factory condition). Keep in mind that repeated adjustments will embrittle the handle and may eventually cause it to break (and likely void the warranty as well).

Effective Smart Tool
You can save some weight with the plastic shovels but there is something to be said about steel. When it comes to clearing roots and rocks at your camp site this little gem can help. You can put an edge on one side and rid your tent spot of those nagging tree roots that will keep you awake all night. The fact that it folds and can slip into your back pocket is kinda neat and convenient. I got mine at walmart for 4 bucks. Highly recommended!

CRAP
i ordered a U-DIG-IT shovel made in the USA with a case. i received a folding shovel from china, with a handle that does not stay in place when you dig with it. and it also came with a case that could easily be mistaken for a candy wrapper painted black. CRAP- DON'T BUY.
