Fallen Angels (11) (The Horus Heresy)

This is an excellent read and a worthy addition to the series. I had the good fortune of reading "Decent of Angels" right before I read this. It is an excellent and rich story with obvious plot points to be continued in the future. This part leaves you wanting that third book now. I have completed books 1-6, and 11 in this series, all in the last three weeks. This is an excellent series and this chapter of the story was highly enjoyable. I would definately suggest you read this novel after "Decent", while it takes place 50 years after the events in "Decent", the characters are the same. I think it just added to the richness of the entire story for me without having to reintroduce myself to the characters.

I would give it 4.5 Stars if that were an option mainly because the author portrays Lion El'Jonson as socially inept perhaps even with mild case of Asperger's syndrome. Although I don't have a problem with primarchs having such personality flaws, Jonson does not seem to jive with the other Horus Heresy versions of near demigod-like primarchs (are there editors at the Black Library?). Otherwise the book flowed well, it had a terrific mix of fluff and action, and it did a fine job of encapsulating the salient points of its pre-quel "Descent Of Angels". The reader should not feel they need to read the boring Descent Of Angels in order to understand this novel (a blessing from the Emperor indeed). Most importantly, anyone who follows the Dark Angels knows there is some shameful secrets in their past and this book gives you an admirable view of what is at the heart of the Dark Angels shame -- Bravo.

Let me first be blunt in saying that no, as of the writing of this review, I have -not- read "Descent of Angels" - It's getting packed and is soon to ship, along with everything else currently available for the Heresy series. This book is exactly what it should be - The fall of the Dark Angels (indeed, of any of the Founding Legions) is not going to be a simple, cut-and-dried event. "Good Guys" are never as simple as so many think they should be. This book gives us insight on Jonson the man, not Jonson the Pinnacle Of All That Is Good. In this book, we see the consequences of events in DoA - Notably, of Luther's last minute decision to not betray Jonson. The seeds of the rebellion and schism were planted in DoA (book 1, as it were) and in Fallen Angels (book 2) we see those seeds grow to fruition - Luther and the Exiled Dark Angels gradually break with Jonson and his Dark Angels, over what they see as Jonson's betrayal of Caliban - A very human decision, in light of what had been done to them. If, as some say there "will be," we get a third book it will be exactly as it should be - A 3 part play, with a beginning, a middle and an end. The Fallen Angels - even in the 40K canon - have been intentionally left as 'grey matter' - Are they truly followers of Chaos by choice, or are they followers of Chaos by necessity? Personally, I look forward to the grand finale - whenever it comes. We know how the story ends - All we need, now, is the great battle that so many fans can feel and see coming - The clash of the Titans, as it were, between Luther and Jonson. Well written, and definitely a solid lead-in to a third and final book detailing the fall of the Dark Angels and Lion El'Jonson.

You know, I started reading these Horus Heresy books because every time I was in a book store, I would see them and pass them off as some silly sci-fi novels about the table top game. But then I decided to try the books out. I don't think I have ever been so enthralled about a universe like Warhammer before. Tolkien, Jordan, Salvatore, etc etc love them all. But this Horus Heresy is the best. Regarding this book (Fallen Angels), it is fantastic. I find myself really torn between both sides of the story, you can easily sympathize and understand Luther's decisions. Wonderful book. One of my favorites. If you are not in the series yet, you can start with Horus Rising and you will get addicted.

I have come to really enjoy this series. It has great action and intrigue. Fantastic science fiction. The only problem that I have with this series is the struggle between good and evil. If you are a Warhammer 40000 fan, you already know how the future ends up. These books just fill in the details, but all the scheming and betrayal hits a real sore spot with me. I am in the military and I can understand the brotherhood that is built between squad mates and a fighting unit. I would highly recommend any Sci-fi nut to get into the series.

The story of Luther continues. I continue to root for those banished to Caliban, and even though I know it won't happen, I want Caliban to be saved somehow. Grimdark indeed. Not only is Lion a jerk, he's an idiot too. Read the ending and his buying of support so he can become the new Warmaster. Imagine how great the Dark Angels would have been if Luther had been the primarch.

If you love space marines and in particular the Dark Angels then you will love how this book answers some and raises more questions about their Past. In the interest of full disclosure I'm not a huge fan of the Lion so I found his actions to be par for the primarchs course. They all needed a good mother figure and a dad to slap them across the face and say don't be a little b**ch!

Yet another good book in the Horus Heresy Series. It was interesting to see how the knights fell to the dark powers and the personal struggles of some characters trying to determine where their loyalties lie.

Ich kann mich nur dem Urteil der beiden anderen Rezensenten anschließen und verzichte daher auf Wiederholungen. Es ist wirklich für jeden, der Interesse an der Geschichte der Dark Angels hat, unverzichtbar. Ergänzend sei noch darauf verwiesen, dass derjenige, denn das weitere Drama um die Spaltung der Dark Angels interessiert, an der Lektüre des älteren, jetzt als Neuauflage erhältlichen "Angels of Darkness" nicht herumkommt. Astelan wird 10.000 Jahre später im Felsen gnadenlos verhört und erzählt seine Sicht des tiefen Falls der Dark Angels.

After the last book featuring the Dark Angles I was dreading reading this but to my glee this was a much better offering. The characters are built upon with the primarch's shortcomings being exposed and a feasible decent for those of his legion left on caliban. This book was so enjoyable to read it is hard to express but it has made me like forward to the next book from this series.

an excellent addition to the series but more answers are obiviously to come - flows on nicely from the descent of angels, keeping the main characters - the ending leaves you wanting to know more, especially where the loyalties of El Jonson lie - nothing is as simple and straightforward is it might seem - if you enjoy this I reccommend Legion by Dan Abnett where the motives and aspirations of the Alpha legion are equally suspect
