This is NON-Diastatic malt. (Not the "dough conditioner")
If they only labeled it correctly they would sell far more of this product. I've purchased from Barry Farm for years, and had to laugh at all the arguments and questions online about what this really is. It is MALT. Dried, powdered malt flour, for flavoring, light sweetening, and to aid browning. It is Not "Diastatic" malt which still has enzymatic activity, since This is roasted to stop that activity. Think of it as "malted milk powder" but Without the dry milk and (important) without all the added sugar. It has a natural sweetness all its own, and this shipment has a more yellow color than many I've used. ADDICTING USES: Add a teaspoon to your buttermilk pancake recipe to make people wonder (I recreated - after trying for years - some I fell in love with in San Francisco years ago). It also is important for Banana Muffins (and bread) - especially if adding a bit of whole wheat flour to the mix. Also helps Blueberry muffins and loafs. But omit or half the vanilla in those quick-bread based recipes; it's too much if adding malt. And yes, use it for flavoring beverages, cocoa, hot milk, etc. And IMHO, it's a must in Bialy recipes. (For easier blending, add it to the sugar and salt portions of recipes before mixing in.)

Fine grind, mixes with dry ingredients well
I use this product to make malted milk and also put a tablespoon in my homemade bread. Mix it well with the bread flour so it doesn't lump. Adds extra flavor. Have also put it in with the powdered milk when making yogurt. Makes a great taste in almond flavor yogurt. Just watch out or it will lump up. Seems to be a finer grind than Hoosier Hill Farms product.

Worth it!
Wow! I can't believe it took me this long to discover this, considering how much I love malted milk! This was delivered quickly and is delicious. I was excited to learn about this product because I figured adding a little malt to my smoothies would help me get all the healthy down. I wanted to be able to enjoy malted milk without processing or sugar, and instead be able to use stevia or agave as a sweetener. Barley malt powder does have as many calories as sugar and is used as a sweetener, so you will have to decide for yourself. I like having it as an option, especially since it comes from sprouted barley. It tastes sweet on its own, but I found through experimenting (tough job, but someone's got to do it) that adding a few packets of stevia to the blend with the malt powder brought out the flavor of the malt. Do your own experimenting. You can't go wrong at this price for the quality.

Making nice malted milk.
More expensive than I expected - I’ve never bought malt before. It is good. I put a couple of tablespoons in the blender with milk and fruit and make malted milks.

Makes whey powder bearable
I add 6T per 2 cups of dry whey powder for making protein shakes. My concoction is not as sweet as Carnation Instant Malted Milk and has more protein (20 grams vs. 1.5 grams depending on your whey source). Add 5T of the malt/whey powder to some water, ice, and a half banana, blueberries, or a few dates and you have a great recovery drink. If you want to go all crazy add a T of Cacoa powder for a chocolately treat. Add stevia if you have a real sweet tooth. If you want to go all crazy use whole milk and Hershey's syrup. Heck, a scoop of ice cream while you're at it!

Homemade ovaltine
Barley malt powder goes great in our homemade "Ovaltine" powder. Its a pricey ingredient compared to the others, but if you like an old fashioned malt, this is what you want. This is a smooth and very fine powder. One pound is equal to about a quart. After I opened the bag, I poured the rest into a quart jar for storage. This bag doesn't re seal, so you will need to store it elsewhere.

Great Malt Powder
Since I have always loved the taste of malt, I grew up drinking malteds, made from real malt powder. My faves were chocolate and banana. When I became an adult, it occurred to me that you could hardly find a real malted any longer--only "shakes". Also, as an adult, I begin to bake my own bread and discovered, through reading a lot of information about bread-baking, that "barley malt" was an ingredient that artisan bakers used in their loaves. At first I purchased the liquid form of barley malt and didn't even connect the fact that this was real "malt", only in liquid form. I added it to some of my bread recipes and the result was a positive one, in yielding richer tasting breads. But the problem with the liquid is that you refrigerate it, and subsequently, it is a sticky, syrupy substance--difficult to measure out. Hence, my interest in the powder form of malt. This product is the real thing. It has NO ADDED SUGAR, like most other products do. Other recognizable-named products work well, if you just want a "drink powder", but if you want the most nutritious substance, able to enhance your yeast baking, AND to make divine malteds and ice cream sundaes, GET THIS PRODUCT. I will continue to buy this pure Barley Malt Powder. Love it!

dont confuse this with "milk malted powder"
Its a good product. Just make sure you dont confuse this with "milk malted powder", an entirely different product made with dried malt extract (DME), powdered milk, and sugar. This is ground up malted-ized barley, that should more accurately be called "malt flour".This is no fault of the company, it is accurately labled. Though I use malt for candy, this is more suited for brewing, and baking.
