Painting Abstract Landscapes

Impressive book for the artist
This book is a very intelligently written providing good reading. I however did find many of the words used rather deep which makes it unusual compared to many other easy to read books. Having said that it is never the less a quality cracking good book with a wonderful insight into abstract art. It has many illustrations of paintings some which show part stages. The print quality and images are high quality and overall a wonderful book to use and have on any keen artist bookshelf wishing to learn abstract landscape painting. The painting style is very much based on Turner but the colours are so much less vibrant many contrasting dark against light and on the more neutral tones. Highly recommended!

A motivating and inspirational book
I can’t praise this book enough. It is unlike many other ‘how to’ art manuals whose content is repetitive, often giving the same, basic information. Gareth Edwards is a superb artist and the instruction he gives is original. There is also much sophisticated philosophical discussion re his approach to painting landscape and how this relates to various figures in art history.Another point worth mentioning is the very high quality of the writing. This ensures that the book’s sophisticated content is communicated clearly and effectively, making for an enjoyable read - a great authorial collaboration! This book is top notch - and is both motivating and inspirational.

Inspiring; helping me take my painting to the next level
I'm really enjoying reading Painting Abstract Landscapes. I've got various step-by-step kinds of books, but the approach of this one is different. There's a lot of the artist's philosophical and emotional approach to painting in the book. The book is great for me as I love abstract painting and landscapes but had been struggling to combine the two. If you are in a similar situation, I recommend this book just to get you thinking. The book is practical too - there are a few exercises to get you experimenting rather than to produce a finished work. It deals with composition, colour etc in a surprisingly thorough way - good practice and knowledge being essential for abstract painting as with all painting. It's interesting and inspiring just to sit and read, and he refers to various artists and works which are worth a bit of a google. My only minor niggle is that the book is printed on very shiny paper, which can make some of the reproduced artworks a bit difficult to see in depth!

One of the better art books
This is a great book to help artists loosen up out of a habit of fiddly, picky detail in their paintings. I've had 'artist's block' for a few years now, and this book has helped a great deal in getting me started again into a looser style of painting.
