Beautiful but somewhat preachy story
I feel a little torn over this book. Overall it was a really good book. I absolutely loved Denver's story from start to finish, made all the better since it's completely true. I found Denver to be totally authentic. His joy and his pain lifted right off the page and grabbed a hold of me. Though he asks for no pity, you can't help feeling sorry for the bad hand he has been dealt. In the end this serves to magnify Denver's triumphs over all the adversity that he has faced throughout his life. For as much as I liked Denver and his story, I just couldn't get behind Ron. It seemed like everything he did was a mere attempt to win brownie points with his wife and up his image. I recognize that many will feel differently from me but I found Ron to be overly preachy. His relationship with God became almost over-the-top by the end and I just didn't buy it. (Side note - this book was produced by the world's largest Christian book publisher, which explains the strong themes of religion throughout the book.)The story itself merits credit, so by all means go ahead and read this book.

An inspiring story, well told
Subtitled "A Modern-day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman who Bound Them Together", this 2006 book is a true story.Set in the deep south, Denver Moore, a black man, was born on a plantation in Louisiana in the 1930s and never learned to read or write. Eventually, he left his squalid life and moved to Texas where he was homeless for many years and even spent some years in jail. In his 60s he went to the local mission for homeless people. It was there that he met Ron and Debbie Hall, white upscale volunteers who befriended him and changed his life. This is a true story, told in alternating chapters by Ron (the international art dealer) and Denver (the former homeless person). Unfortunately, Ron's wife Debbie has passed away but it was actually through her inspiration and work with the homeless that this story could be told.I enjoyed the book. It is truly inspiring although there is a little too much emphasis on religion for my taste. However, this was the truth as the writers saw it and I was able to relate to them in spite of this. This is definitely a good story, well told, and the message is positive.

EXCELLENT STORY
I just re-read this book for the second time. I forgot what a beautiful story it is. I had a tissue box near me for a good part of the story.

As I read the book Same Kind of Different As Me: A Modern-Day Slave and An International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together by Ron Hall and Denver Moore, I was very shocked at how this amazing story was even true due to the two significantly different backgrounds Denver and Ron had. Ron grew up in a rich family while Denver grew up with a background of slavery. It was through the love of Ron’s wife, Deborah, that they were able to come together and even support one another after a tragedy soon after their friendship. The way Hall and Moore put their narrative together was very well organized because they combined a timeline of their lives and also included their own perspective of life and of one another. I enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it to everyone else because this true story is a great example of how God’s work in other can truly bring people together and better their lives.

Helpless, Homeless, Jesus - what Compassion?
I met a homeless man living under a bridge and visited with him one day. It's hard for me to understand why he's homeless and how he chooses to live. I went to church and told my Sunday school class about the circumstances of this one man. A friend of mine recommended this book, "Same Kind of Different As Me". I am not a reader but I couldn't put the book down. Ms Debbie meets Denver and see's past his reluctance to let someone into his life. She shows each one of us how - if we listen to their story and have compassion and understanding,we can befriend others and help the individual - if they decide, to change their circumstances and come out of poverty. Ms Debbie has to help Denver because she believes in Jesus and has to live with "WWJD" attitude. Ms Debbie knows what her responsibility is and puts her plan into motion to help Denver! A Personal Story Of Historical Significance
This story haunted me for days after reading it, but in a good way. It reveals horrors about the lives of African American people struggling in the South even as the Civil Rights Movement was going on. But that is not the main point of the telling of this family's "best of times" and "worst of times"...I cannot review in depth because I do not want to spoil any part of the story but I can promise you that you will not predict any of it! I will say that I thought the author romanticized his wife to a fault and that I found her controlling every situation a little irritating in spite of her being a fine, Christain example in every other way. I really liked her and all the characters of the book.

This is a page turner. Must read!!! Ladies have your tissues handy.
So wretchedly honest and emotional read!! My father was a sharecropper so I can relate to some of Denver's pain minus the homeless part. My mother worked did day work for a wonderful white lady with a heart of love. Her love for my Mom and her children made it possible for us to go to college. I am a product of segregation and there a many good folks who know the love of God and have compassion to make the world a better place. We never know the paths our lives will lead us or the unlikely person(s) that will make a difference. I read the book on E-book, but I will purchase hard copy for my personal library .

Started Off Good .......And Then
Pacy start, began to slow, turned into utter drivel half-way through. By the end of the book I was bored witless. Sheer unadulterated, self-serving, self-pitying drivel. I put it through the shredder when finished to prevent the possible suffering of others.
