Since its publication 15 long years ago, this book has not been updated to address the far more complex challenges that face nursing management today--it is woefully out of date. And even if it were up to date, I'd question its value, with topics such as "What is a policy?" and "How to delegate." These are not basic management skills--they are basic NURSING skills. Everyone who has made it far enough along in their career to become part of nursing management knows these already. In its current state, I cannot recommend it.

great self-teaching guide
As a nurse who is a unit manager for the first time, this guide has been an invaluable resource to getting started in my new position. The book is broken down into easy to understand categories and clearly and simply explains the many aspects of nursing management. Overall, this book is a must-have for a first time nurse manager. I'd also recommend a book called "The Nurse Managers Answer Book" as a more in-depth, research-based supplement. These two books will make your life easier and less stressful as you transition into your role as a new nurse manager.
