Firestorm: The Nuclear Man

Firestorm: The Nuclear Man: United We Fall was originally published alongside of several other stories under the one title of "Legends of Tomorrow;" unlike the others that were included, Firestorm is the only character used on the television series of the same name, so it would be easy to assume that this book is intended as the main attraction of the lot. Currently, I've only read two, this and Metal Men: Full Metal Jacket, so while I cannot gauge it based on the other stories, this is definitely the weaker of the two, hand down.Unlike Metal Men, which functions very well as a starting point for those characters, Firestorm very much continues on from the New 52 stories before it. While there is nothing too hard to figure out context-wise, anyone not familiar is going to be puzzled as to why Ronnie and Jason combine instead of one of the two with Stein.The story doesn't really do anything great. One particularly irksome chapter inexplicably skips back and forth on moments over a short period of time instead of just showing them chronologically, which absolutely undermines the flow of the battle at hand. The story also attempts to add a little bit more depth to classic villain Multiplex, but when that equates to Multiplex standing around chatting with his kidnapped scientist, basically saying the same thing over and over while building a machine, it doesn't exactly give much impact. Most of the conflict simply comes from the military arbitrarily declaring that Firestorm may possibly be connected to the actual terrorist Multiplex in some way. Not exactly "A" material.The worst point of contention is how Jason very much gets the short end of the stick (Warning to those interested, here be spoilers). Jason begins having seizures, so Stein removes the Firestorm matrix from him, something that is stated to be permanent many times over (the book likes to be redundant). However, lo and behold, the matrix had nothing to do with his seizures; a rival student kept spiking his drinks before a big job interview, something NO ONE FINDS SUSPICIOUS WHEN IT KEEPS HAPPENING, LITERALLY EVERY TIME HE INTERVIEWS. It's not even given proper gravitas, as he never seems to bat an eye at it. All in all, it feels very much like a forced way to return to the original dynamic of Ronnie and Stein. Bizarrely, the series doesn't even spell Jason's name correctly (Rusch, not Rausch), something that I don't even recall the New 52 title as doing.If you're a fan of Jason as the character (or Jax, who is a close expy on the tv series), you should definitely turn away, and if you're a fan of Ronnie as the character, you should still ignore this one. There are better Firestorm stories out there.

Firestorm: The Nuclear Man is a great return to the classic duo I love so much. This marks the return of Ronnie and Professor Stein together as Firestorm. This story is fun and entertaining. It feels like a classic story from Firestorm comics.

Great to see Firestorm back again. Fantastic new story by Gerry Conway. It's always hard to challenge a character as powerful as Firestorm but Conway does it brilliantly here. There's a great twist to the nature of Multiplex's power (I've always considered him to be the arch-enemy of Firestorm) and a surprising resolution to the love triangle between Ronnie, Jason and Tonya. Nice artwork as well. Hopefully this will lead in to a new Firestorm ongoing series.
