Dodsworth [DVD] [1936] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

Not sure I agree with the previous review about 'bad woman needing to be punished'. But agree that Mary Astor helps lift the movie. She's only in it (briefly) at the beginning, then more at the end, but she lifts the film with her luminous beauty and acting subtlety.

If it wasn't for Mary Astor, who saves most films she was in, this would be a 2 star from me. Surprisingly honest look at divorce, for the time and code restrictions but its still yet another film from the era where a "bad" woman has to be punished. Great scenery and shots of the ships.

Walter Huston is believable as the loving but betrayed husband of a wife who thinks too much of herself and her aging looks..story is typical of the 30's almost saga/drama but really the best of it's time..great shots of the old liner RMS Queen Mary sailing from berth in New York as well as the Italian liner Rex (Glamourous in it's time) and later destroyed by allied bombing..shown sailing(possibly) from Genoa or in the Mediterranean..the couple's european trip brings out the guts of both and honesty prevails in the end..sort of ahead of it's time in portraying marital problems and divorce I thought and very well done with Mary Astor outstanding as ever as the husband's "Angel of Sense"...Madam whatever plays her typecast role as excellentally as ever...don't miss this film with it's amazing message and lesson..oh yes, if you're a David Niven fan he's superb as usual!

I ordered Dodsworth DVD but the title on the box was Desengano. It was a Spanish version. However, by using the select language function, it was still possible to watch the DVD in English.

What I could watch of the movie was fine. I had to try three DVD players before I could get it to work and then the picture kept freezing. You also had to be a rocket scientist to figure out how to get the language to stay playing in English once switched from Spanish. First time I've had a problem like this. Maybe I got a bad one but it was an international order and I didn't have time to return it.
