just too sweet…
Unrealistic little froth of a story…promising beginning, dull middle, abrupt ending…good deeds are rewarded, evil selfishness is punished, solid honesty and hard work wins the glory…a wishfulfillment dream…how many marriages? How many broken hearts? Well written, well paced (except the ending), with sweetness and light, rustic goodness, urban evil; no political or class-based conflicts…everything well-ordered and kind…even in the colonial setting good is being done for the natives…god is an englishman of the best sort, right? This text is interesting as a sample of what the public wanted…sweet pablum for the masses… superficial and deceptive…vacation read? …

4 stars
I rather expected this book to be a bit boring but it was very interesting. Thete weren't too many confusing characters and there were some fascinating scenery descriptions. The story did seem to rush along at times but it didn't lose the gist.Well worth a read.

A Simple Tale
Simply told. I,ve not yet figured out quite what makes D E Stevensons novels such page turners but although it's as simple as fable and really quite predictable it's had that same effect as all her others have - a great excuse for a cup of tea and a sit down. Kindle will have justified it's existence if it can keep bringing such pleasant gems back into availability.

Lovely
I had to buy this novel by D E Stevenson second hand as it is no longer in print. It is a lovely book which I remember reading many, many years ago and it was lovely to re-read it. Anna and her daughters move from London to Scotland when the death of Anna's husband leaves the family without money. The novel follows their lives as they settle in and over the years. It is not a plot-driven novel but the characters are wonderfully drawn and very engaging. Some publishers are beginning to re-publish some of D E Stevenson's books and she seems to be regaining her earlier popularity - in the meantime, I'll have to scour the second hand market for more. I am hooked by this genius of an author I had no idea existed.
A book full of life, love, self sacrifice, and hope. Alongside the well established authors of classical literature this lady spins her unique tales like pearls upon silken strings, so that one runs into the other. A genius of storytelling.

A refreshing change from other books
I thoroughly enjoyed this book about Anna and her daughters. As some reviews have said it recalls a time now passed and I found it relaxing to read. The end was rather predictable as in all love stories.

Excellent read
Really enjoyed this book. I read it many years ago so this is the second time I have read it but enjoyed both times.
