Q: Are there holes in the bottom of the cups or do the cups hold the water? I don't want to have a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Yes there are holes in the bottom so when it rains it looks beautiful running through them all. Now leaves from our gutters will seldom get caught in the top one but that's an easy fix just pull them out. I catch the rainwater in a watering can which Inhave placed underneath 

Q: can these be linked together to make a longer chain?

They don't appear to be made specifically for this purpose but with a little imagination, additional chain, wire cutters & pliers I think you could make it work!

Q: Do i need an adapter?

I am unsure what you mean by an adapter? There are no electrical components related to this item.
