Great external CMR HDD for the price
I picked up the 14TB version almost 2 months ago. My purpose for it is to backup my NAS (TrueNAS, no compatibility issues. SMART works fine)When I first received it, I hooked it up to my Windows PC to do a quick and basic performance test (nothing crazy, just copying files to and from). I was able to get +200MB/s in Windows when copying larger files. The speed drops with small files, but that's expected. After hooking it up to the NAS, write speeds are pretty consistent between 100MB/s [smaller files] & 160MB/s [larger files] during backups (since it's for backups, I have a fair bit of compression enabled which slows things down a bit. Software encryption is also enabled. This is more a limitation of the NAS CPU, not so much the drive I think). Performance wise, I'm very happy with it.One thing to note, and made me concerned even before purchase, was the listed operating temps at 5C to 35C. Except when first powering up after being powered off for a while, the temps are always higher than 35C. Being a WD drive, this honestly doesn't surprise me. After looking up the actual drive specs (it's a white label model #: WDC WD140EDGZ-11B2DA2 in my case) the critical max temp is 77C, recommended max is 65C, max 56C and avg max 51 [ https://smarthdd.com/database/WDC-WD140EDGZ-11B2DA2/85.00A85/ ]. I found the drive was pushing close to 60C after extended periods of writes (took a few hours), with it generally idling (but still spinning) at around 50C. I think the issue is that the rubber feet/pads are VERY thin and they restrict the passive airflow. I put a couple 'shims' under it, raising it to ~4mm off its resting surface, and the temps dropped by ~5-10C for both extended usage and idle (even after 3 hours of heaving writing, the temp doesn't go above 51C now). I would recommend doing the same until WD adds thicker pads themselves. [FYI, the ambient temp in the space it lives is generally between 20 & 25C]Operationally, it's super quiet! I think this was the most surprising aspect of it. My previous external HDD that this is replacing was notably louder under load.Overall, I'm very happy with this drive, with my only concern being the limited airflow to keep temps down due to the too thin foot pads.

Good Storage For The Money
Good product. I've always found Western Digital hard drives to be reliable. They make backup easy.

Great capacity, kind of slow sometimes
I needed a bigger capacity hard drive to support my growing media library. Up to this point I've used smaller 4-5 TB external hard drives that do not have a separate power source. I don't mind the power adapter because it stays put on my wifi network, but I would find that annoying if I needed it to be more portable. Comparing it to the smaller drives that I've used, it is kind of loud (whenever I use it to watch something I can always hear it making noise) and it takes a few seconds to spin before I am able to access my media. Again, not really a huge issue but it's something that I didn't really notice on other hard drives. Overall, it works to hold my media but I would consider using another option if I were to replace my media drive.
