Virginia Woolf′s Nose – Essays on Biography

Engrossing study of biography-writing
It’s a slim, insightful and engrossing set of studies of how Shelley, Pepys, Woolf, Austen and Proust have been treated by their biographers, and the conflicting interpretations offered of the biographee. How a biography reflects the prior attitudes and ideas of the biographer; how lives are re-interpreted according to changing ideas in society (e.g. feminist interpretations of Jane Austen versus the previous traditional views). Stated like that, it seems rather obvious, but it was Lee’s examples, her weighing of the arguments, her challenging statements, and her delightful style of writing, which made it such an absorbing book.
