My 9 year old enjoys working through this book
Alongside homeschooling. My 9 year old dislikes literacy and will do anything to try and avoid it, but he loves this book and said its fun! Bitesize tasks with really good explanations/recaps. An excellent resource. Will be buying more from this series.

Fun, educational books.
I love these books! As a home educating parent, who follows the National Curriculum with two children, I find these books to be engaging, with colourful graphics, good explanations and progression throughout the books is gradual yet noticeable. My only regret is that I didn't buy Mrs Wordsmith books sooner!

Enjoyable English workbook.
Our 8 year old daughter enjoyed completing this workbook. She particularly liked the illustrations. Adult assistance is need because some of the introductions to the questions are not clear enough. There is also new vocabulary introduced which requires pronunciation help. The questions themselves are clearly and suitable for the age group. We are not impressed with the Word Tag video game. It is a simple 3D platform game. As you travel through the world, words pop up along with their definitions. It is not a fun game and a very poor way to introduce new vocabulary.

Excellent
This is a really good book. Lots of stuff to do and is well laid out. It is as interesting for the child as such a book can be. I think it is excellent - perfect for either some revision or for home educated children who are following the national curriculum.Would recommend.

Very useful
Well written and designed exercise book, clearly laid out with a range of useful topics on grammar and reading comprehension and writing. I use it for extra homework during holidays. Just 10 minutes per day and this is very helpful. Recommended.

An indispensable aid for Year 5
I’m currently giving some help to the nine-year old daughter of a friend with her English, and as she moves into Year 5 this book will be an ideal aid.As a retired literacy tutor, in the past I’ve used a lot of the CGP books. This one is the first of this type I’ve seen from DK, and the first which is a workbook covering a whole year of the English curriculum. In addition to the dreaded spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG), there are also sections on vocabulary and reading and writing. Each sub-topic consists of an explanation backed up with examples, e.g. the different types of nouns, then a relevant series of questions for practice. The explanations are simple enough not only for children but for parents who are bemused or rusty (you may be using fronted adverbials without knowing what the term means!) The answers to the questions are reasonably straightforward, where necessary saying “your answer should be something like this”, though answers can’t be provided for the few free writing questions; writing may be best left to teachers, who will have mark schemes.I particularly liked the vocabulary section, which doesn’t just cover the mechanics but gives practice in the tricky art of using more varied and appropriate words. The Introduction says you can use the book in any order, dipping in and out as you please. It could be used for to consolidate a new topic at school, or for revisiting old topics which need a boost. The book has an app which you can access via a QR code. The app will let you “play hilariously fun games and get exclusive rewards.” There is a three months’ free trial “worth up to £24”, i.e. it costs nearly £100 per annum. I haven’t even bothered investigating this, but I am confident that this book, for £7.49, is far better value. If you want to buy only one book for your child’s Year 5 English study (apart, of course, from some decent fiction), this is the one to get.
