Does this have an ambient light sensor? So it only illuminates the lights when it's dark enough??

The output from the sensor is set to 24V (or I assume 12V if you are using a 12V power supply) for a set time when the sensor triggers, I don't know the circuitry inside the units so there's probably a small chance you could damage some components if you are setting the output pin to 24V externally but I doubt this would be the case. If you wanted to be 100% certain of not damaging anything you could put a diode on each output that would stop any current flow back into the unit, but personally I'd just try it.
