The Little Town of Marrowville

Magical Whimsical Cannibalism
Lemony Snicket who? Rahl Dahl what? These guys got nothing on the majestic weirdness that is John Robertson and this gem of a book "The Little Town of Marrowville." I bought it for myself and my 7 year old daughter and we both have found it to be strange and fantastic. Wonderfully written! It has cops that long to be criminals, children who rejoice in eating the remains of their father, and a man who throws fish at passers-by. Not to mention the loving tavern owners/dentists (see assassins) who help our loving brother and sister duo. Actually its just the brother because apparently the sister doesn't exist. It is a must read! Not to be missed! Seriously! READ THIS BOOK!

Officially nephew approved (And he's not easily pleased...).
As a long time colleague of John's from the comedy circuit I knew how funny he is live, both as a comedian and with his incredible Dark Room interactive show. As a result I knew that any book he cared to write would be good at the very least. As such I bought a copy of The Little Town Of Marrowville for my eight year old nephew hoping that he'd enjoy it. An accomplished but somewhat fussy reader, he's not bought into quite a few very well known childrens' books. A tough audience. Thrilled to report that the blurb on the back of the book caught his interest and the content soon hooked his attention as well.He went on to devour said book inside of a week and is still quoting some of his favour lines, one in particular involving flies and ducks. Seeing the joy that this unique, quirky and charming book has given him is absolutely wonderful. He's since gone on to take Marrowville into school where his teacher is reading it to the rest of his class.Treat yourself and your kids to this book. You won't regret it.Here's hoping that the wild eyed Australian has more books like this up his sleeve.

A brilliant darkly funny book
Brilliant funny book. Not just for kids! Some unsettling imagery which works well for the creepy tone. While the action might seem more appealing to young boys, the main protagonist is a brilliant female role model. Some genuinely memorable lines and characters. Especially the horse.

Gruesomely funny
In a similar vein to Roald Dahl or some Tim Burton works, this is a darkly funny book meant for middle grade readers. I loved it and the 9-year-olds with whom I am sharing the story love it. Some people may pause at parts (the comic cannibalism was initially, uhhh... hard to swallow) but it is written for and to children of that age where the gross and macabre are the funniest things ever - and it's written intelligently to them, and in the end it is also a delightful and heartwarming story. I understand there is to be a sequel; we will read that one as well!
