Not sewn, not glued. Looks like they are attached by the tiniest rivet I have ever seen. They will not fall off.

Q: Would this work to use for decoration on a cake?

I don't decorate fancy cakes, but this is not edible and it is fairly thick. So unless you let people know not to eat it AND there is no way you are going to cut through it with a cake knife. So I can't imagine using it on cakes. You would have to pull the whole thing off before you will be able to cut the cake, in which case the cake on your plate is not gonna look very pretty.

Q: What is this made of? Is it cotton, or synthetic?

It doesn't say on the package what the material of this lace is but it doesn't feel like cotton. I would be safe to say it's synthetic. It's very pretty.
