While the mighty Shaw Brothers were dominating the Hong Kong martial arts scene with hard-hitting features like THE CHINESE BOXER and dazzling us with an aesthetic brilliance found in productions such as LEGENDARY WEAPONS OF CHINA or THE SHAOLIN DISCIPLES, writer and star JACKIE CHAN and director Chen Chi-Hwa were cutting across much of the pomposity associated with many of these types of films and offering something much more akin to parody with HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FUAccident-prone Jiang (Chan) dreams of learning Kung Fu from a master, but when he takes employment as a bodyguard at a shady mansion, he stumbles upon an evil witch and finds himself in the middle of an uncertain future.Funny, inventive and clever, HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU provides light-hearted action, some bonkers scenarios and of course, Chan's patented style of fun and fury.

Half A Loaf of Jackie!!!
Half A Loaf of Kung Fu is one of my favorites from Jackie Chan’s 1970’s era of Lo Wei films! I’m so happy it finally got its 88 Films release! Here’s to the future of the company and their counterpart Eureka blu ray! Now we need Master With Cracked Fingers and Magnificent Bodyguards 3D and I’ll be the happiest devoted super fan of Jackie Chan!!!

Poor vocal sound on this DVD - VHS vocal sound is much better.
This is one of my favourite early Jacky Chan films. So I thought I would get it on original DVD now that VCR players are all but gone. I was surprised to find that the vocals are so low no matter how high I turn up the volume. I am so glad that I had burned a copy of my VCR to disk before my 3-in-1 packed in because the sound quality is second to none. So I will gladly watch my copy. Actually, I thought I had mislaid that copy, and that's why I bought a used one and the poor sound on this used one made me search harder for my copy - which I found, luckily. They just don't make them like they used to any more - hence only three stars.

Give it a Go
The idea of Jackie Chan playing someone who knows nothing about Kung Fu might put alot of people of this film. The first half hour is, indeed, a load of rubbish, with Jackie throwing eggs at people and generally running around like a particularly energetic/annoying Charlie Chaplin. Other characters seem to crop up for absolutely no reason whatever. And then he learns some Kung Fu.It's actually quite interesting to see certain moves taught to Chan, by the random bunch of vagrants who just appeared to be in the film for laughs. These characters become more important as the plot develops (and it is a very good plot too). Chan's skills get better and better. And the fight scenes get better too. The end sequence is fantastic and involoves a suprising range of Kung Fu styles for the many different fighters involved, all of whom are there for a reason. Some of the humour is very unfunny. But Chan was a pioneer of humour in Kung Fu movies (as the review below states) and he's bound to be a bit hit and miss. Infact sometimes it's like watching Laurel and Hardy or early American comedy movies. All in all Chan's energy and enthusiasm is enough to make up for the off-key moments.
