Wish I had bought this when I first started
I am an Adult beginning player who has bought a number of beginner books. I haven't left any comments on any beginner books until now. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy this book the very first time and not need the other beginner books. When I compare it to the other beginner books I have, I would give this 6 stars! It is excellent even for adolescents and children. If you are learning piano, this is absolutely the first book you should get. If you already have beginner books like I did and still learning, this book will help you immensely. The back page teaches you the music sheet and matching notes with keys on the keyboard, if you don't already know that. This book will teach you the rest from 2 finger exercises, gradually progressing up to triads, intervals, staccatos, and some etudes. The exercises even sound pretty. I haven't bought his other books yet but I will. I believe in his easy methods in teaching piano. Add to this book an easy book for "songs" and you are on your way.

This Schaum Classic book. It's been around a long time for a reason.
If you're starting over again or beginning, this is the best way to learn notes. He doesn't try to teach the staff lines and spaces while skipping around. All of the notes are taught at a gradual, slower pace. Right here you start off learning 3 notes at a time. Essentially one page after another with just 3 notes per page and all on the same 3 staff lines. Then from 3 he will add one more note, several pages later, he'll gradually build by adding one note again. This book has been around for a long time, since the 1960's. Keep it simple stupid worked for me. For simplicity sake you can finish and learn all of your staff lines and spaces notes with Finger Power 1 easily within a month or two instead of trying to complete this fancier book produced by the same publisher #1 selling Alfred Scales book.

For the serious pianist - no pain, no gain
This is a product for those who believe in traditional piano teaching methods, not the modern methods where students learn to play songs quickly but fail to really learn to read music or proper technique. I used this product in the 70's and am now purchasing it for my young sons. I can't tell you that it's fun, but it is effective in teaching proper technique, building finger strength, and ensuring proper development in both hands. This is like sending your hands to the gym for a piano workout. To balance out this effective-but-not-fun program, I'll also purchase the Pointer system books for my kids. That system teaches chord theory but it is fun, useful if you want to play guitar later, and the songs sound really cool for the younger student. John Thompson (from the 30's) provides the foundation for their learning, and then we will move over to Schaum after the 1st grade book. The point here is that Fingerpower should not be used alone, but rather to supplement your regular piano program, and I'd recommend finding an additional system like Pointer to help keep the learning process fun.
