Easyheat self regulating heat cable initial impression
I'm an electronics hobbyist and I like to know how this works. But it is hard to know the details from the literature, so I ordered the 5-foot kit to see for myself. This is what I found: there is no temperature sensing switch inside the plug or anywhere else. The plug simply connects 120V from the outlet to the heat cable with a pair of puncturing screws.I plugged it in indoor (room temp 62 F). The cable, not in contact with anything, reaches temperature of around 84 degree F, and consumes 16W.It is not as self regulating as I wish. Even if there is a 10 degree temperature drop between the heat cable and the pipe, it needs only to heat up to 42 degrees to prevent freezing. To go to 84 degree F is using power unnecessarily. But a few extra watts of electricity is cheap enough to waste if it prevents burst pipe.Easyheat makes another type of pipe heat cable that is thicker with a more flexible and rubbery cable. That one has a temperature sensor and may be more efficient, but this cable is alot slimmer, and is easier to fish through existing holes along the pipe.

Different than pictured, assembly required
Admittedly I had never used this before and was unaware what type of assembly would be required. It is not just a simply matter of sticking the wire in and going. Screwdrivers (philips and regular) and wire-cutter are required for assembly and vinyl tape required for installation. Also while the box matches the contents in the box don't match the picture. The picture shows a different orange plug where there prongs to plug into an outlet (or extension cord) are directly on the orange unit. What I received has a heavy duty several foot black cord with the power plug on the end of that- which probably works out better- but wasn't what I was expecting.

Great Deal!
Easy to put together better price then brick/mortar. It worked perfect for me just like it is pictured it can wrap around pipe not a long straight pass like other pipe heating products. I needed to get to about a 2 ft. lenght of pipe at corner of attached garage that pipe for heat goes through. Yes a plumber ran pipe for heat in worst possible place in house.I insulated pipe made sure garage door had gasket going all around outside an inside but on freezing windy days pipe does freeze.Oh did I mention pipe has 2 elbows and 4 inch pipe in between! Of course slowing hot water at worst possible location! this is good quality pipe heater, good co.,with a lot of good reviews from other web sites.

Total waste of my money
I chose this rating because when I ordered it to use on water pipe I never thought to check if it could get wet. ITS GOING ON WATER PIPE REALLY GOOD CHANCE AT SOME POINT IT MAY GET WET!!!! So it's useless as the location I wanted to use it could get wet occassionally. The product description upon closer look does say for use in dry locations so I guess it was my bad. I decided I would return it, however, not only would I have to pay return poistage but a $5.00 restocking fee because it wasn't their fault. Live and learn, I will never order anything else from this seller. I am VERY dissappointed in the product and the seller.

Thought it was 15 feet
Hard to understand product description -- I thought I was getting one for 15 feet, but it turned out to be 5 feet. Going back, I can understand, but it shouldn't be so hard to understand. Arrived at very end of promised date.

heat tape
This is the best heat tape you can buy. Keep in mind 5 feet after wrapping covers about a 2 ft area.

Very nice!
This seems to work very well. I wrap a faucet stem in my crall space that leads to an outside faucet. It's too much trouble to crall in and turn off the faucet so this keeps the pipe warm when it's below zero.
