Ode to Moss...and other overlooked plants
An entertaining and well organized book. I found it to be more of an admiration of moss and lichens than a definitive guide to collecting and growing them. But I am not disappointed with the book. There is a great deal of information about where mosses grow, what conditions they prefer, why your rock won't grow moss, etc. There are a great deal of pictures that balance the text out well. Most plants are referred to in the Latin, which I appreciate very much. There is about half the book that does address growing moss and to a lesser extent lichen. Not species specific info, more generalities and techniques with some troubleshooting and DON'Ts. He addresses things like transporting mosses across state or country lines. Gives ideas for different containers or uses to consider. There is a nice section on Bonsai mosses....both used with Bonsai trees and featuring moss as Bonsai itself, in mame size. Or growing & displaying moss and lichen on rock or branches, arranged in a Bonsai pot.I was looking for something that was a bit more field guide crossed with cultivation information specific to each variety. This was not what I was looking for, but it is an excellent book.

If you're obsessed with moss, this should be your Bible
Once you get bitten by moss, your obsession can be all-consuming. Start here, with the tome of tomes written with witty style and humor. Already I sound like a moss nut.Humor, in a book on moss, yes grasshopper, and that is just the beginning. There's info on replacing your green lawn with moss (a lovely idea), moss for bonsai, identifying moss, and finding moss. There's a bit about keeping moss in terrariums, which in my experience and the author's is tricky. I contend it can be done, but most mosses like so much humidity that their ideal environment is hard to obtain even in a terrarium. Other mosses don't like stale air, so wane in a terrarium. It's hit or miss, but part of the fun is "moss spotting" in places you never thought you might find moss, bringing home little sustainably harvested bits, and making a nice new home for them. It can be done, but do yourself a favor and buy this book first so as to give yourself the best chance at success. The little world that moss inhabits is an ancient and patient one. Won't you join me?

pass it by
I am really disappointed. It condones removal of specimens without stating the need to check legal removal in protected areas. Those mosses may be rare.Use of poisons. I know this was written in 1997 but poison is poison. The use of Roundup, stating it is as cosmopolitan ass Coca-Cola. Use of another extreme herbicide, paraquat, banned in Europe, is pushing to clear soil by poisoning! He even stated he knew paraquat is banned in many places but still ok the use.I am now looking for a better book on moss gardening. It is not a total waste but not an easy read or easy to understand instructions

It's a very interestingly written book mostly about mosses. The only criticism I have is that the descriptions of varoius types of mosses would be improved by magnified images of the mosses so that they would be a bit easier to identify.

The Joy of... or HYI?
The other reviews, both positive and negative, seem to be on the mark. I think the words, "The Joy of" should have preceded the title. I was personally looking for a little more of the "How to" in this book about gardening. '...not much about lichens. It was both funny and long winded at times. It was beautiful but not as informative as I would have liked. This makes a great, compact sized, coffee table book but not a very good HYI text book.

A really great book that has helped me in making my own moss garden. Lots of information. Growing moss seems to be quite easy according to the book and it has proven true in my yard.

All you need to know to create a mossery.
This book is written in an odd 19th century poetic style but at the same time it does contain everything you would ever need to know about mosses. I think the book would have benefited from some seriously heavy editing and I also would have made it twice its existing size with some whole page professional photographs. At the moment it has the tone of those post war, very informative books on how to raise chickens or build sheds. If however you have a need or desire to study the habits of mosses in depth then this is the book for you (and it is in colour and the photographs are fine). It does what it says on the can.

For The Love of Moss
The book is written with just the right amounts of history so you can get to know and understand your miniature plants. The book gives your expectations hope and creates excitement and desire to be apart of the moss world. Each page gives a full realization you are not the only one out there who loves moss and thinks the garden should include the gentle ground cover.
