Children Who Chase Lost Voices [Blu-ray]

A gorgeous rendering of life's most sophisticated and childish questions
Breathtaking in its scope, this is an epic odyssey of discovery. Filled with unimaginable plot twists, the main characters each pursue their entwined goals. There are no simple answers. Steeped in Eastern symbology, the ultimate objective is a unification of duality: life and death, idealism and the pressures of the moment, the unknown and the mundane, joy and fear, love and hate, war and peace. The scenes are lovingly constructed visually/audibly/emotionally: eliciting repeated fits of Awe. This is a classic for the ages, appropriate for either small kids or old adults. It shocks at the same time as it soothes. Truly, this is another masterwork by Makoto Shinkai plus everyone involved in its creation/execution. A central question hangs above the gigantic plot: is life a curse or a blessing? Not giving away anything here, the characters discover it's a matter of perspective: where the answer is (as with most things) neither one nor the other, but both. Yet how can such disparate realities be reconciled? As with the "children who chase lost voices," each of us must find the uncommon courage to step out of our moment into another world... Buy it for the spectacular rendering then rewatch it far into the future for the continuing glory embedded into each of life's ephemeral moments. Bravo!

In the Tradition of Hayao Miyazaki
Along with the films of Hayao Miyazaki, the films of Makoto Shinkai are the gold standard of Anime feature films. And "Children Who Chase Lost Voices," is of all of Shinkai's films the one that is closest in feeling and form to Miyazaki's.Like most of Miyazaki's films, the central character is a strong and admirable young girl who has to overcome obstacles in order to fulfill her destiny. And like some of Mirazaki's stories, she experiences a world that is magical, strange and at times terrifying. In doing so she grows in stature and depth of feeling and develops an affection for a young boy of equally admirable character---Which however does not end in a romantic relationship. And as in Mirayzaki's films, the animation is beautiful! But as in most of Makoto Shinkai's films, there is a strong sense of the longing of the human heart for love; whether it is the mutual love of a boy and a girl, or as in this case, a daughter for her father or a husband for his wife. In any case, there is a strong sense of poignancy and nostalgia, which though not as intense as in most of his other films, is still present and an aspect of his work that makes it differ from Miyazaki's.In any case, if one is a fan of Miyazaki, this film will be particularly appreciated. And if it leads some to explore more of Shinkai's work, that is all for the best.

Shinkai's most Underrated!
Not exactly perfect, but this one does get overshadowed by other examples in Shinkai's filmography like 5 Centimeters Per Second or Your Name (which the latter is my personal favorite). This one though needs more talking.
