Q: Does the stand take up more room than a recliner?

It’s about the same as a recliner

Q: What is the black nylon strap for?

It is to anchor the chair from swinging around. I think it is personal preference. I use mine.

Q: When installing the leg rest, is it supposed to fit in the hole init’s entirely? I cannot push it all the way in but it does seem stable and usable.

When the leg rest is pushed in it boots up against the chair.

Q: Can I purchase just the leg rest? I have one of these chairs but mine doesn't have a leg rest so I'm wondering if I could purchase just the leg rest.

I don't think so. It has two points to insert the leg rest, so you can use it or not. I looked hard for this feature, and it was the only one I found like this.
