For Me and My Gal [Blu-ray]

This is a CLASSIC film for many reasons. Released in 1942, it was Judy Garland's first film intended for her as an adult, and it was also Gene Kelly's first film. Set prior to World War I, it follows the two trying to make it big on Broadway- then Gene Kelly gets drafted into the US Army. I won't spoil it for you. I WILL say this is a must for fans of both actors. Keenan Wynn also was in the cast- I'll let you figure out where. He was uncredited.

Hadn't seen in years and very much enjoyed. Video quality was great. Overall very pleased with purchase

I love musicals!! Judy Garland and Gene Kelly are sensational in this wartime love story! Palmer and Hayden (Kelly, Garland) are a vaudeville team who fall in love and plan to marry as soon as they have their first performance at The Palace. When they FINALLY get their dream booking, Palmer is drafted. Simply wanting a few weeks delay so he can play The Palace and marry his girl, he purposefully injures his hand. Hayden receives news that her soldier bother has been killed, and then gets angry, believing that Palmer was trying to dodge the draft while boys like her brother were laying down their lives. She breaks their engagement, and he suddenly discovers that his hand is permanently crippled, rendering him unable to be a soldier, so he goes overseas as a performer for the troops. While there, he becomes a hero by risking his live to save a group of medical men. When he returns to the states, Hayden, herself a performer for the troops, is singing at The Palace. When she sees him in the crowd, she runs to him, and their former fellow performers usher them both back to The Palace stage to sing the song that brought them together - "For Me and My Gal." :-)

Gene Kelly and Judy Garland are always magic together, but young Gene Kelly (in his first film role) and young Judy Garland are completely irresistible in this film. The adorable factor practically makes my heart burst. If you like nostalgia, musicals, Gene Kelly, or Judy Garland, this one should be a winner for you! :)

It has been some time since I saw this movie on television and I had forgotten how wonderful it is. I am a Gene Kelly fan and I must say he really lights up the screen in this movie, his film debut. Paired with Judy Garland, they start out in vauderville as seperate acts, both dreaming of playing the Palace (New York) one day. After a late night cup of coffee, Harry (Gene Kelly) plays a new song for Jo (Judy Garland) on the piano and she begins to sing the lyrics. They both realise that they make a good duo and so, form a partnership, Hayden and Palmer. There are lots of ups and downs as they play two bit towns waiting for their big break. World War 1 breaks out, and Jo loses her only brother, so when Harry purposely breaks his hand to avoid his enlistment orders she says goodbye to him and goes on the road entertaining the troops. Most of Harry`s vaudervillian friends have enlisted and he realises what a coward he is. He tries to enlist in the Army, Airforce and the Marines but with his damaged had is rejected. To try to make amends, he joins some old pals and goes to Paris to entertain the soldiers. It is here that he finds Jo and eventually they get back together. It is filled with some wonderful songs, including the title track, For me and my gal. If you are a Gene Kelly fan, this this is for you.

These old black and white movies are so crisp at 2K definition. I'm glad the studio preserved the film.

I liked seeing the young Judy Garland dancing with Gene Kelly. And the old songs were terrific.

A great film about the days of Vaudeville and WWI. The inclusion of the superb musical numbers of that period were perfect, as were Gene and Judy's portrayals and nonpareil musical talents. One question lingers about Mr. Kelly in the MGM Musical era...why was this nice guy primarily portrayed as a semi-heel in most of his roles? Kinda unfair. Although...he is invariably exonerated and forgiven at movies' end. Also, are there many more musicals in the past wherein Judy looked more appealing and downright beautiful? Admittedly, this film would have been measurably and visibly enhanced if it had been produced in Technicolor...at least, for me and my gal, Kristi.

Heavy handed and filmed in black and white, this being Gene Kelly's debut makes it a must own.

Sono una fan di Judy Garland e Gene Kelly, scoprire che rimasero amici intimi per tutta la vita dopo essersi conosciuti in questo primo film girato insieme, mi ha fatto innamorare ancora di più di questi due mostri sacri del cinema d'oro di Hollywood! Il film è del 1942, e che dire... è semplicemente Meraviglioso!! Si respira appieno l'aria di quell'epoca con la guerra (il film è ambientato durante la prima guerra mondiale), la nostalgia, la tristezza dei giovani che venivano mandati a morire, la solitudine delle persone che ricevevano telegrammi improvvisi della morte dei loro cari..Cosa dire di Judy e Gene.. bhè.. Judy era un mostro sacro di bravura! Recitava, cantava e ballava in un modo più che magistrale! In questo film aveva solo 19 anni ma era grande come pochi sanno esserlo anche solo a 40 anni!! Un mito assoluto del Cinema, un'icona, una stella che non smetterà mai di brillare perché il suo talento, come lo stesso Gene Kelly disse: 'era grandioso, la persona più talentuosa che il Cinema abbia avuto!'Questo per Gene è stato invece il suo primo film, Judy lo aiutò moltissimo durante le riprese, lui stesso dichiarò che Judy fu molto disponibile e gentile con lui, più di quanto lei non si rendesse conto. Lo aiutò nella tecnica della recitazione e nel ballare davanti ad una cinepresa, che, ricordò Gene, era ben diverso dal ballare in un palco di teatro.Gene non dimenticò mai la gentilezza e l'aiuto avuto da Judy, tant'è che le rimase per sempre riconoscente e rimasero amici intimi per tutta la vita, girando insieme altri due film culto dell'epoca, ossia: "Il Pirata" (1948) e Summer Stock (1950).I loro numeri di ballo e canto sono qualcosa di meraviglioso.. assolutamente sublime! Due icone fantastiche! Judy aveva una voce potente già da giovane età, Gene ballerino perfetto e grande showman (e già qui si cominciava a vedere, il resto è storia ovviamente).Amante di questi due mostri sacri, non potevo non avere nella mia videoteca i film che interpretarono insieme e grazie ad Amazon, li ho presi tutti!! *-*Consigliato a chi ama il vero Cinema. Quello con la C maiuscola ovviamente. Non è consigliato solo a chi ama i Classici a mio avviso, ma a chi ama il vero talento, la vera bravura, il lavoro duro che alla fine dà più di quanto ci aspettavamo! Judy e Gene lavorarono duramente durante le riprese e il risultato è straordinario!Questi erano veri artisti! Veri attori, cantanti, ballerini... tutto!!Non rivedrete mai più due persone così, due grandi artisti di questo calibro, perciò non lasciatevi sfuggire questa perla rara di film e, nel complesso, tutti i film di Judy Garland e Gene Kelly.Spedizione e imballaggio perfetti!Valentina

I love this movie!! I don't think I can make one short list of my favorite movies with Judy Garland - I'd put almost all of them in!!! But this is a great musical! It's a war time musical, and Gene Kelly's debut. Judy is the prettiest, and she does the greatest musical numbers, and some with Gene Kelly. I know that GK didn't like his first performance here, but I felt that he was very good and believable! I never saw anyone do anything wrong when they're beside Judy Garland. I don't know what's not to like about the movie, but I found the story very charming too! Maybe people can't relate to the war period nowadays, is that it? I don't know. Anyway, the story is romantic, and the numbers are great! I just want to be there too!!!! Judy and Gene make a great couple, and here look just the best!I know that for some people region 1 DVDs are a problem, as they don't play in region 2 DVD players, the ones we have in Europe. For me it's no problem, as I play DVDs with region 2 in the DVD player, and the DVDs region 1 on the computer, connecting the computer to the TV. But I know that for someone is. So, just to warn you, this IS a region 1 DVD, and it will play only on multi-region/region free DVD players, or on the computer.

Réussir d'abord et se marier ensuite tel est le postulat de base adopté par ce couple d'artistes avec toutes les complications sentimentales et professionnelles qui en découlent. C'est aussi l'occasion pour le spectateur d'assister à de nombreux numéros chantés / dansés par Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, George Murphy et de réentendre des succès du Music-Hall américain datant de la période allant de l'avant à l'après guerre 1914-1918... Incontournable!
