Q: how is shipping weight 31lbs on a 5lb bag????

It’s definitely not wet sand and even if it was the water wouldn’t add 25 pounds. Mine was bone dry and came in a little 5 pound box. My guess is to stack shipping costs

Q: Can it be used for corydoras? They need a very fine sand.

I would say you could probably find finer sand not that this sand is bad but its like salt whereas you need a sand that is like sugar.

Q: Can you use it for goldfish tank? i have a 40 gallon tank and only want a thin layer sand at the bottom. how many bags do i need? thanks!

Four bags. I have one bag in my 10g, it made a very thin layer. wishing you success with your project.

Q: Can this be used with live plants?

It can be used with plants and it is not live sand. Live sand implies there is live nitrifying bacteria in it. There is not.
