Everyman (Dover Thrift Editions: Plays)

I first read this in an old Norton anthology of English literature over fifteen years ago, and was struck then by how relevant it is nowadays as to when it was composed. A lot of people, especially Christians, need to read this for their own good, because unfortunately too many people in this world tend to confuse religion with Christ, patriotism with religion, and materialiasm with morality. Frankly it should be required reading for all Sunday school classes, especially the adult ones, and its message is as important now as it ws five hundred years ago. The only reason I am giving it four instead of five stars is because the book is so thin it is very easy for it to bend or worse when shipped through the mail. I still highly recommend this book and especially Everyman to everyone.

This book was offered at a great price and the condition was good. This was a book that was mandatory for a college level honors class that I took in high school. I enjoyed that the book contained multiple plays and the way we studied it made it even more interesting. If you struggle with understanding classic literature or terminology from older plays then I would highly recommend that you consider finding alternative materials to supplement this reading.

This play is most likely the most well-known morality play of the Middle Ages. Why read this? Very simply, later artists used many of the allegorical characterization techniques. For example, many of the two-dimensional characters in Shakespeare like Falstaff and Richard III can be interpreted as extrapolations of certain vices. This play will give you the ability to see how Medieval influence persisted in other works.

Anyone interested in Medieval literature is sure to like this. The plays are enjoyable to read and "Everyman" gives one things to reflect upon,which is I suppose,the whole point of a morality play.

It was a unique read. Very consistent with the times and belief system of the day and age. Not my favorite cup of tea though.

If you are interested in the literature of the Middle Ages, this is a must-have. Really interesting window to the beliefs & concerns of the times.
